These steps are for my TomTom One (2008) model.
1. Once you have turned on your TomTom tap the screen.
2. Tap 'Change preferences'
3. Tap the arrow to get to page 2 of Preferences
4. Tap 'Change voice'
5. Tap arrows until you get a computer voice - I chose Samantha.
6. Tap the 'Select' button to the right of the voice picture.
7. This screen is labelled 'Speech preferences' and the first one is 'Read aloud street names'
8. Tap the box to the right to select this preference.
Good luck.
I have just discovered you can only use the computer voice (which is Samantha US) in the tom tom one to get spoken street names. This post here helped me out though..thanks
So when you go to change the voices, you have to see the COMPUTER on top of the voice choice to ensure it speaks the street names. It will promt you too. Also once you select the computer voice it asks if you want this or that spoken..
Hello,
I think you need to go to the "select a voice" option menu, select a computer voice which you might find is "Samantha English US" when you then hit the "select" box you should see a screen with tick boxes. Tick "Read aloud street names" then press "Done" and all should then work ok.
Hope this helps

What TomTom doesn't tell you is that you have to match your language preference with your Computer Voice language.
If you are like me you probably selected English UK as your language, then selected Tom or Samantha as the computer voice. Problem is they are both English US.
Select "Change Language", choose English US, then select "Change voice", select anything you like for the Recorded Voice (it will show Male or Female in top right), but make sre you select Tom or Samantha for Computer Voice (it will show Male Computer or Female Computer in top right).
When you hit the Select button you will be able to select the boxes for "Read aloud street names", "Read aloud foreign street names" and "Read aloud road numbers. The "Read aloud traffic warnings" and "Read aloud POI warnings" are also available, but they were already available with English UK as your language.
