When I power on my sharp monitor it has power going to it, but as soon as the I start to boot up the pc, nothing is displayed on the monitor (its just a black screen).
I have tried the pc with another monitor and all is well (i can see it going through its boot up criteria). I have even tried to replace the graphics card.
Any ideas ?

Are you using the digital connection??
If so try using both the analog and digital connection then set the digital as the Main monitor in your graphics card interface.
To check if the backlight is out, darken the room, and light a flash light into the screen. If you can see a picture, then you need to replace the backlight.

The picture board on your monitor is bad, since the power led or button is on and all connection are corrrect, it means the
board of your monitor has developed fault.
The best thing for you
do now is to take the monitor to a local repairer within your vicinity
to help with the replacement of the picture board
because the fault is not something you can fix yourself, in order not to
it is going into sleep mode, good luck with this.... i am currently asking how to get my hard drive to quite putting my monitor into sleep mode.
although it hasn't worked for me because my screen stays black, one of the options given to me is to try to start in safe mode and then adjust your settings to "never" on the energy/sleep/hibernate mode
some one else suggested that i remove and reseat the video card
go to the add a--- section under the control panel and right click on the monitor/s
click on the properties tab and then click on the compatibility tab
tick the box and click on the os you want for that computer
click apply and ok
in that properties you will also find a drivers tab , click on that and then the driver update line
it will search and download the latest drivers or come back with a message that the driver in use is the most appropriate one
