I have that same problem, but I believe it is related to the sliding window that activates the lens assy. If I pull the sliding cover farther away from the lens, it will come out and stay until I move it slightly towards lens, and I do mean slightly. It is annoying to say the least. Is there a cheap fix to this?

Does it beep or do anything other then turn off? what does it do in play mode? Does it have a good memory card in it? hold the memory door down tightly and try it. Akalines on these older smart media card type cameras just dont cut it they need ALOT more power then you think. NiMH rechargables are the only thing i would recomed using anymore. Dont listen to the tv NiMH are what you need. If you notice on the memory door when it open, there is a little plastic tab that stick out. This tab goes into a little slot on the camera, that slot pushes a button that tells the camera when the door is open and closed. These buttons can sometimes cause problems. So make sure the batteries are NiMH and the door is fully closed with some pressure on it. Also see what it does in playback mode. If it stays on fine in playback mode it may have a lens problem. The mechanism for the lens to move in and out could be jammed

Only thing I can suggest is to try different batteries again. maybe something more generic, regular aa's. also note that the d-500 can use only mem cards that go up to 16 mb, 32 if you do an upgrade. If you're trying to use a newer card that might be the reason. Good luck

Dropped camera. Will not turn on. Sticking lens cover prior to drop. Olympus stylus 500

Most probably you already have a defective camera. The camera's internal components are sensitive to shocks especially the lens. If it's not turning, try to remove the battery first for 10 minutes. If it didn't turn on after you put it back in, more likely you need to send the unit to any camera repair center.

What are the most common problems with digital cameras?

Best place to buy a lens for that camera in on EBAY....cameras, even digitals, are made to take a drop, but, sometimes it can hurt the camera, over times it shouldn't...buy a new lens, and give it a try.

Same for me. Does not turn off

This is normal. It is like a soft power-off to conserve battery life. To turn it back on just hit the ON/OFF button again. And then turn it OFF with the same button and the lens should retract as normal. The time out only powers down the electronics, it doesn't power down everything. you have to turn the camera off manually to turn it ALL off, including retracting the lens.

Olympus Stylus 730 shuts off after few seconds. Battery is fully charged, tried a resetting: no change.

To save battery power, the camera automatically goes into sleep mode and the monitor turns off if there is no operation when the camera is turned on (when the lens cover opens and the monitor is on). No picture is taken even if the shutter button is fully pressed in this mode.
Operate the zoom lever or other buttons to restore the camera from sleep mode before taking a picture. If the camera is left for 15 minutes, it automatically turns off (the lens cover closes and the monitor turns off). Press POWER to turn the camera on.

Dropped Camera - Lens won't close

Generally speaking if your camera cost $500 or less, and you can't fix it yourself, it is cheaper to just buy a new one.

Attaching non-Olympus lenses

The E-500 body has a "bayonet" twist & click attachment for the lens. There is no way that a simple screw threaded lens can attach to the camera directly. The lens that you have are designed to screw into the front of the original Olympus lens. I have seen some of these adverts on auction sites and they are worded something like "The wide angle / Tele lenses are simply mounted in the front of the Olympus EVOLT E-500 / E-330 / E-300 standard ZUIKO Digital EZ 14-45mm lens, or any other lens with 58mm filter thread." Which maybe isn't clear enough. So the bottom line is that you need an Olympus lens to use the other lenses you have bought. Please update the question & let us know if the information given was useful to you - Good Luck!
