I have a HP LaserJet 4L that worked fine until I tried to hook it up to a new computer. I paid a technician by the hour to help me. He installed a PCI card into my new-to-me Compaq computer with Xp.
We could not find drives for LaserJet 4L with XP so he chose LaserJet 4. It printed out the sample page just fine.
Since he has left, nothing on my computer prints in either Word or PDF prints. Page is garbled, off centered and individual words are recognisable but lines are not read-able.
I just bought a new LaserJet cartridge days before my new-to-me computer came to meet a work deadline which is the reason I am wanting to "save" my old printer as long as it "was" still working.
What can I do? I certainly hope you can help.
Or Microsoft Drivers
Information about the Microsoft(R) Windows XP Solution
HP
worked closely with Microsoft to prepare for the release of Windows XP
and to optimize printing capability for HP LaserJet series printers.
The drivers that ship with the Windows XP operating system represent
this joint effort between Microsoft and HP for providing enhanced
printing support through the in-box PostScript(R) and PCL drivers.
Specifically, these in-box drivers use
the Microsoft unidriver and PostScript driver architectures with HP
additions for enhanced functionality. When these drivers are included
on the operating system CD, they can be installed using the Add Printer
Wizard feature of the operating system or through Plug and Play (where
applicable).
Although HP worked to provide comparable
functionality with the Windows XP drivers, some features may not be
available via the in-box driver. HP LaserJet 4 series, 5 series, 6
series and 8500 printers may have drivers with added functionality
available from the product specific download pages on hp home
. Updated HP LaserJet 8500 drivers will also be available from Microsoft's Windows update.
. Select Download drivers and software (and firmware) and then type in
your product name and then select Download drivers link again.
these drivers do not
support Quick Set functionality. Driver functionality will vary from
product to product and will depend on the original feature set of the
printer.
Installing Microsoft Windows XP Solution
The following
instructions are only accurate if Windows XP is configured in the
Classic View. For information on changing the Windows XP view, click
the following link to access the support document HP and Windows XP Troubleshooting - Changing the Appearance of the Windows XP Start Menu
from the hp website
(Doc ID bpq01036)
.
Installation instructions
Windows XP software for the products listed below should be added via the Add Printer Wizard
for both parallel and network-connected devices.
For network printers:
For parallel-connected printers:
If the printer is
attached via a parallel cable to the PC, when the system is turned on,
the operating system will automatically install the appropriate drivers
for those products that support Plug and Play. Products that do not
support Plug and Play will indicate to contact the vendor for the
correct drivers. All of the products listed below have drivers on the
operating system CD and can be installed from the Add Printer Wizard
.
Okay, so as I understand it, you now have the correct driver installed, but the applications won't print.
Perhaps the old driver is still there as a printer. What I mean is, go into control panel/printers and make sure ONLY your new 4L printer shows up there. If another printer, specifically a laserjet4 shows up, just highlight and delete it.
Go back into your word application and bring up the print screen. make sure the printout is routed to the Laserjet 4L.
See if this helps...

Here this is a compression Tool
This is the Download file so you can UnZip the File /Driver/patch
I use this program it is safe and fast download...WinZip is also
a great tool but not user friendly.
Just down load and then ....Then when it is done...
Right Click on the File that was given to you by one of the Experts.
Then select unzip file the extract the file.
ThankYou
Jayson
Make sure that in the word Doc and you are printing to select the correct printer.
Also go into the control panel and right click on the correct printer and Select Default Printer
after that try it again.. If all is good!! than i would suggest to remove the other printer in the file so you do not have this problem again.
Thank You
Jayson

Hey,
The drivers are available on this page
I see vista, xp, windows 2000 etc listed.
Let me know if you need anything else.
Thanks,
Ekse
Go to this link: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&taskId=115&prodSeriesId=25486&prodTypeId=18972&objectID=bpl11035 for instructions on adding a printer under Windows XP. You should find enough information here to verify your installation.
If the printer is printing garbage then you might have a problem with the memory or formatter in the printer which for such an old printer would not be cost effective to fix.
Great, now try printing from Notepad please. Notepad will send basic text to the printer, if this works then there is a problem with something else on your computer.
I assume you are using a parrallel try this also:
Click Start->Run type cmd and hit OK.
You should be at a black and white screen at a c:\document and settings\... prompt.
Type "dir > lpt1:" (without the quotes) and press Enter. The printer should print list of files.
This type of test is very low level and bypasses the driver, if this works then the printer is fine and there is a problem in your computer.
Also make sure that the 4L is set as default and that Word is trying to print to it and not another printer or driver. I would go to "Printers and Faxes" and delete any printers you don't own and printers that don't work. If could be that the test page works find but Word is trying to print to another printer and not the 4L but since the 4L is connected it's getting junk commands.

Windows XP has built-in driver for HP 4L printer. I own this 4L too.
I think, power off HP printer, un-install current driver in PC and power up printer, windows will look for driver and install it automatically.
let me know if this didn't work.
To un-install printer go to...Start > Control Panel > Printer and Faxes, delete HP4L and close windows.
Restart computer and power up HP 4L, pop up will come and windows will recognize your printer as hp 4L and install driver automatically. message will come that printer is installed successfully and ready to use. then try what you wanna print.
In case, windows doesn't start installation of printer,
Start > Control Panel > Printer and Faxes > Add a printer, wizard will start to recognize printer and install related driver and so on...
Alright, when you got test page correctly it means printer and driver is OK. You should check and update Word or MS Office software by going to microsoft.com

Usually answered in minutes!
I do not know which version of XP I have. It was installed on the computer when I got it. How can I find out?
Thanks for all your help, and I am sorry but I am a novice here used to relying on our ISM at work for everything. I can unplug my Laserjet 4L to turn it off, but I do not know specifically know how to erase the printer drivers that were installed. Do I go to Printers and Faxes and just delete it assuming I can recognize which one it is. I was watching when the technician installed it and the driver said Laser Jet 4 instead of Laser Jet 4L.
OK Coolguy008 gave me a direct link. His e-mail is no longer showing on my request for some reason.
I still have not disconnected the Laser Jet4 drivers from my machine.
I did use the link and checked everything like coolguy008 instructed then I was asked the category of my request application or software?
I am assuming it is an application but I am not sure.
Still waiting for answers now to the last two questions. I am a novice.
Sorry that link did not lead me to the HP printer drivers I am looking for. I opened the zip file and it was nothing about Laserjet 4L.
I now have no printer drivers installed on my machine. I am still waiting for someone to comment on previous questions I have asked.
Thanks to all of you.
Thanks abhishek33
I am NOT USING VISTA so that is not helpful.
I still need an answer to the previous questions - trying to find a link to HP Laserjet 4L I can work and someone to help me install it and not disappear as soon as the comment is made.
I have tried an almost identical link as this before. Both of them have taken me to the same page http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/Tec...
which gives me a zip file lj32en.exe which I do not know what to do with.
there are no instructions give there for installing as someone said. There is no automatic installation as someone else said.
I am still needing help finding printer drivers for the HP Laserjet 4L and help installing it.
Thank you
OK, someone has given me a correct link and I have successfully installed HP laserjet 4L on my printer according to the control panel.
I have printed a test page and it printed perfectly, but when I try to print a 1 page Word document NOTHING HAPPENS
The Printer cable has been reattached to the Computer .
What have I missed.
No, I am not on a network. This is my home pc and it is connected directly to my PC
I received over 10 e-mails telling me that there was a new e-mail with an answer to my problem.
I have opened half of them and I do not see ANY NEW INFORMATION AT ALL on any of them.
thank you kindofcheap
this is not my solution
Thanks
this is not my answer
Thanks for trying. I still need help.
Thanks but this does not help.
Thank you Jerry Pal this does not help. I do not have a star on my computer.
