Maytag MBF2558HEQ. Evaporator freezes up. I R/R the door seal, the defrost bar, the defrost thermostat, and the thermister (which I realize now I didn,t need to replace). Unit still freezes up. If I do service test 1 Defrost Thermostat & Defrost Circuit Test, the defrost thermostat shows as closed and the defrost cycle begins. What am I missing? Thanks, G

Hello G (Andreseng),

Sounds like you have accomplished quite an education
for yourself in REFRIGERATION...

The good news is:
It is much easier than EVERYTHING you have
already done... Bad news: Part cost $204.23

For purposes of our discussion... it sounds like you have
fully covered the AIR INTRUSION reasons for FROST
blockage... and have graduated to the DRY
defrost DRAIN PAN part of your journey...
(water should appear there daily (dry = bad sign)).

You are successfully calling out all the parts of
the DEFROST CIRCUIT but one... (power source).

Older (simpler) refrigerators, freezers & wine coolers
these were DEFROST TIMERS but yours is a
Defrost CONTROL BOARD which (in your model)
lives right behind the temperature controls...
in front of your upper interior lights... SPECIFICALLY
"WPW10503278" (
yours is called a jazz board)
http://www.appliancepartspros.com/whirlpool-board-jazz-wpw10503278-ap6022400.html

I am including a VIDEO INSTRUCTION GUIDE...
This is where the "D-Sense" (orange) wire of
your DEFROST HEATER gets line power from...

Video Guide
Refrigerator Electronic Control Board part WPW10503278 How To Replace

I BELIEVE ...
you get pretty much the same parts everywhere
(partselect collect "CORE" cards... (rebuilds??))

Obviously I like appliacepartspros... (today):
Good prices, support, forums & guarantees
(I no longer consider SEARS as fondly
(abusive, expensive, incompetent... etc., etc., ID10TS))...

>>> $89.00 <<<
(I don't like them... and this is probably a mistake...
$89.. is a WOW PRICE

Refrigerator Electronic Control Board Part Number WPW10503278 Sears...

Competitors. $208.09, $265.95 - (core) = $204.95

Hope this helps

If the evaporator is just freezing up around the area where the refrigerant first enters unit, then it may be low freon. When the defrost element is fubar the entire evaporator is covered with ice not just a segment of it.

if the thermostat is not cold enough it will be open and not allow the heater to come on. I would suggest you let the unit run for a few hours then check on the defrost cycle. in that time the terminator should close allowing the heater to work

Why does my refrigerator work and my freezer won t freeze

The most common cause for this condition is a problem with the defrost system. The defrost heater turns on several times throughout the day to melt away any frost that may have accumulated on the freezer evaporator coils. ... If the defrost heater does not have continuity, replace it.

Coils freeze up and fridge runs all the time till I melt coils.

There might be a few causes

Door Seal might be defective causing the door not to shut tightly this causes air from the room to get into the freezer through the opening and as the air comes in contact with the evaporator coils, it freezes. Normally the defrost system removes the ice but if the seal is defective the coils freeze too quickly and the defrost system cant keep up

If the freezer evaporator coils ice over, the defrost thermostat might be defective. Several times a day the defrost heater turns on for a few minutes to melt away any frost that may have accumulated on the freezer evaporator coils. In order for this to work, the defrost thermostat has to sense that the coils are cold enough. If the coils are cold enough the defrost heater will turn on. If the thermostat is defective it may not be able to sense the temperature of the coils and then won't turn on the defrost heater. If the defrost heater doesn't turn on, the evaporator coils ice over and eventually no air will be able to travel through the coils to provide cooling to the freezer. The defrost thermostat can be checked for continuity. It should have continuity when it reaches the low temperature of its operating range.

It could be a faulty defrost heating element or a bad terminal connection somewhere in the defrost wiring circuit. Make sure the doors seal properly. ie. no gaps between the door seals and the unit when the doors are closed. Door seal leaks can cause coil icing. If okay, the heating element is not working properly (heating up) during the defrost cycle. ie. The ice on the coils never melts off the evaporator coils.

Evaporator keeps icing up , checked heater ok

it may be low on freon or have a defrost problem. you should check the door seals and gaskets. you

put a sheet of paper between the door and seal all around the door if you can pull it out easily the door

is not sealing properly, look for wor n or torn seals or gaskets, make sure the seal is clean and does

not have any icing, food, liquid on it. remove the evaporator coil cover, if the coils are frosted to the

point that the fan cannot pull air thru it, then it is a defrost problem. try to get it to defrost if the heater

heats up the defrost control needs replacing. if it does not heat up it's either the defrost element

or thermostat. undo the element and check it with an ohm meter should read about 30 ohms. remove

one wire from thermostat and check with an ohm meter , should be o ohms when frozen. it opens

just above freezing. good luck!

Unit not cooling down, compressor running, condenser fan running. suction line just cool, condenser line barely warm.

Check if evaporator fan is running. Is there any frost buildup on freezers evaporator cover? If so you have a defrost problem (bad heater, defrost thermostat, thermister, defrost timer or circuit board ). If no frost and the freezer is warm then you most likely have a sealed system problem(leak, restriction, bad compressor) which is costly to repair.

Frosted up freezer

either your door seals are bad or you have the door open too long at a time,or the defrost heater is defective, the defrost thermostat,or adaptive defrost/timer is bad and not supplying power to the defrost heater, you need to remove the evaporator cover and check the heaters continuity underneath the evaporator core

Ice build-up in lower freezer. We replaces the

warm between doors is normal. if hot then clean coils and if coils clean make sure condenser fan motor working thats the fan in the back compartment, however if warm thats good. did the evaporator coil freeze from top to btm is that why u replaced heater. if it was then could be heater,if the coil is only getting frost on half the coil, you could have a sealed system problem. is the evaporator motor working in the frz side if not, then that could be the problem.if coil is froze up it needs to be defrosted. did you defrost coil when you replaced heater,if not try defrosting coils and then wait about 12 hrs and see how it does.
