Question about Microsoft Natural Keyboard Elite PS/2 OEM Brown Box (dsmselitekb)
I just got a computer froma a friend and it has a trojan horse virus, can I restore to the point before the other owner put any info. in it? and will that fix the virus or do I have to do a complete install? and if so what will I NEED TO GET FOR THE REINSTALL becuase I have nothing for this computer?
System restores don't work too well. The virus/trojan has usually embedded itself beyond the restore, you're free to try it, however. If it doesn't work, I would suggest some anti-virus/spyware scanning software. Here are two, one for viruses/vulnerabilities/some spyware and one dedicated to spyware. Both are absolutely free. http://housecall.trendmicro.com runs from your web browser (I would suggest using Internet Explorer). http://www.download.com/3405-8022-5153545.html?part=dl-ad-aware&subj=dl&tag=top5 This is Ad-aware, it will remove the spyware on your computer. This one needs to be downloaded. If those do not work, then you have two choices: reformat the HDD (low-level format in some cases), or take it to a professional who can save your data and remove the trojan successfully. Additionally, you can try Googling the trojan by its name and you'll usually find removal instructions. Symantec and Microsoft have the most accurate methods.

you need to press F8 while the pc is booting for a startup in safe mode, then when in safe mode select start windows in safe mode, go to my computer, properties>system restore tab and turn off system restore and then run the scan again as these trojans cannot be deleted when the pc is in normal use.
If your antivirus finds them but cannot heal, make a note of the file that has the trojan and then search for the file and delete it manually.
Ensure after the trojans are deleted that you tuirn system restore back on
