When my computer tries to generate a thumbnail for movies files it shuts down whatever program is attempting to open the file. This only happens in XP and not on a Mac. Because of this I cannot transfer any files from my camera unless I do not take video.

Another problem coulb be the codec. A codec is a language that the computer needs to comunicate to the opperating system. It is probobly using mpeg4 wich is a quicktime and that is apple. Your windows doesnt have that format installed so its not understanding the comunication. Have you installed all the disks that came with your cameras? it may need to be updated. Go to micrisoft update and check for some XP updates. There are codec packs you can install that cover most of the common movie formats used.

Hi
first of all this isnt the camera's fault
clean your computer (cookies, history, recent, temp ,internet temp)
view the cam folder as a "list" or "details" NOT "thumbnail"
then just copy all the files into your computer and then view as thumbnail
good luck

METHOD 1: Reset Corrupt Thumbnail Cache Folder
First of all try to reset thumbnail cache folder so that it starts storing thumbnail cache files from scratch. 1. Press Win+R keys together to launch RUN dialog box, then type following string in RUN box and press Enter: C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer
Replace Username with your correct Windows user account name.
If the above trick doesn't work for you. Type appdata in RUN dialog box and press Enter. It'll open AppData folder. Now go to "Local\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer" folder. 2. Once you open Explorer folder, select all files/folders present inside it and delete them.
Some files might remain in the folder. Leave them and restart your computer. Now Windows should create thumbnail cache without any problem and it'll not delete them again.
Once you've added you're photos, you can set a different photo to act as thumbnail (the programme automatically chooses the first photo/slide, indicated by a little green ticked box sign).
To change the thumbnail to a different photo, highlight the photo you want as thumbnail by clicking it - the frame will change to yellow - and then click on the green ticked box command ("Set Thumbnail") at the top of the window.
You cannot alltogether delete the thumbnail, because every slide show you create needs to have a thumbnail to link the slide show to the menu screen at the start of your DVD. So, on your menu screen there will always be at least one thumbnail. (The black thumbnail that appears in the middle of your screen when you first open the programme, is a "place holder". It needs to be there and it cannot be deleted. Once you've created a slide show, it will be replaced with the photo you have chosen to be the thumbnail. Every time you create a new slide show, a new thumbnail will be added to your menu screen. The position of thumbnails can be changed, using the second ("Edit") Tab.
You will find a User's Guide on the install disc. It can be accessed by inserting the install disc and clicking on the relevant link, or you can right click on your CD/DVD drive (in "My Computer") and then click on "Explore" to look for it on the install disc - it's a pdf file.
what is the error message?
most common fix for thumbnail issues is to delete the Thumbs.db file in the folder
note this is a hidden system file if you dont see this file let me know and i will provide instructions on how to view it.
this file will automatically be recreated the next time you open this folder
Each video recorded on camera creates a thumbnail picture file which is linked to the movie file, but is stored in another folder. When you delete the movie file on camera via PC, this thumbnail file will be become "orphaned", left in the camera and causes this error message "this movie image cannot be played". You also cannot delete it! At this stage the only solution is to first make sure you do not have any remaining pictures left and format the sandisk. From then on, never delete the movies in camera from PC but only direct from the camera. Posted by Forest.
Look at the instructions for your Nuvi to find the screen resolution (possibly VGA) and then use a program like IrfanView (free) to resize the photos to something like the same. 5MP is far too large a file for your Garmin to even to attempt to display.
for example, if you capture a video with your camera, it automatically creates 2 files: a thumbnail = a picture, and the movie. You're probably trying to view the thumbnail. Check the extensions of the files for those with .mp4 or .mov, those are the movies. These can be played with Quicktime or other players.
Your best bet is to use the built-in File Browser. It has 2 panes: 1 is a directory tree and the other is a thumbnail view of folder contents. I know Photoshop has this and would expect that Publisher has the same. So instead of going to File>Open, use the File Browser which is usually located near the top right-hand side of the toolbar within the application. Double-click a thumbnail to open the file.
There might be a special command within the application or a Windows registry setting that would enable a default thumbnail view in the Open dialog box, but I don't know of one off hand.
This doesn't work for all cameras, but it does work for some cameras.
1) Make SURE you have all the photos in your computer.
2) Put the memory card into your camera and follow the camera's instructions to reformat the card.
3) Take 1 new photo on the memory card.
4) Put the memory card in the card reader on your computer. If you connect the camera directly to the computer instead of using a card reader, then do that now.
5) If your computer tries to automatically copy or move the photos to the computer cancel the process.
6) Use Windows Explorer (or Finder, if you use a Mac) and open 2 windows. In one window, navigate to the drive that represents your memory card. In the other window navigate to the location of your photos on your computer. This is usually in your My Pictures or Pictures drive under your user account.
7) On the memory card you will usually find the photo is in a subfolder, it may be several folders down. There may also be a thumbnail file. To copy files from your computer back onto the memory card so they can be seen in the camera you need to copy the files back onto the card using:
A) The same filename structure; B) Include a thumbnail file if the camera creates thumbnail files C) The file needs to be in the right folder structure (determined in step 7 above).
If your camera makes and uses thumbnail files but you don't have them on your computer, then you probably can't get the camera to recognize the files even if you copy them back onto the memory card in the right place.
1. Click Start, Programs, Accessories and Run.
2. In the open window, type: regedit and click OK.
3. Choose the following path
HKEY_CURRENT_USERS\Software\Corel\User\Assistant\13\Recent Work\Quattro
Pro\
4. Right click on the Quattro Pro folder, select delete.
5. Say yes when prompted to delete the key.
6. Close the Registry Editor
7. Launch Quattro Pro
This key will be re-created when you reopen Quattro Pro. I ran into this problem when when I tried to open a QP SS on my hard drive after previously opening one from my thumb drive. Now I copy to my hard drive first.
There is no known software compatibility with adobe premiere and vista. The problem will be that you might have changed any setting in vista for thumbnails. I know vista is much different than windows. So, have a look around at the settings.
