G'day mate.
The problem you have will relate to the big antennas in your area. Most radio stations pump more than 100,000 watts these days. So it really comes down to the shielding and what's called Radio Frequency Interference rejection of your microphones to keep this out. I would STRONGLY urge you to take the mics back and get a refund,or change them over for something else. They are VERY cheap, there is no real solution to your problem, except for better design... means spend more mullah. If you are looking for a decent low cost condenser mic, I recommend an AKG Perception. I have used AKG for years, and this mic is a great sounding low cost unit.

Hope this helps you. Nothing can be done to improve what you have, they are a cheapo item. Good Luck

yer its just a design problem with the shielding. The old storey, you get what you pay for. Would probably be OK for you if you didn't live near the big Transmitters. If you were to try the AKG against the 990, your ears would be telling you which one was better also. The guys you got em from should not have a problem doing an exchange for you in light of the RFI problems. Just explain that the problem you are having and there is not much else they can do really. If they DONT.... they are a holes and karma gonna get em:) A FixYa rating is a top reward for chattin to ya. Good Luck with your recordings.

    best regards

I have a mxl 990 microphone and its hooked up to a Pro tools LE 8 Mbox Mini . when im recording on protools or any other software with this mic, i hear a static/popping sound and it records the popping...

Try increasing the latency. Depending on your computer, it may not be able to handle low latency levels. Latency is a measure of the delay between the time you make a sound and the time the computer records that sound. With the Mbox mini, the unit for latency is the number of samples the driver collects before sending them to an application as input. Lower latency can make recording easier and more accurate, but not all computer systems can operate at the lowest latencies without introducing noise. Open the Mbox mini dialog and select the latency tab. experiment with higher latency levels and see if it goes away. somervta_0.jpgThis is what the dialogue might look like. another solution would be to try a different DAW. I had the same problem with my Fast Track Pro in ProToolsand it worked fin on Reaper, Garageband and Logic.

Is the 990 an externally polarized capsule or electret?

The MXL 990 is an externally polarized condenser microphone. You will nee to provide 48v Phantom power to use it. Alternatively there is a USB version, the MXL 990 USB which gets it['s power from the USB port.

I've tried several mics: mxl 990, Sure sm58/57, an AKG mic, and I get very low input signal or no signal at all from the mxl 990. The problem is the same regardless of phantom power. Cranking the input...

1. maybe the impedance of you mic did not match to your sound card..
2. sound card did not support you dynamic mic...try to use FET or condenser mic..

MXL 990 doesn't work

Your other preamp does not have phantom power to supply power to the microphone. All condensor mics like this need phantom power. The Audio Buddy provides phantom power, which is why it was shipped with those condensor mics

M-audio buddy feedback from mlx 990 condenser mike

Hey I Have These Mics They Work Awesome. But Yes Feedback Is A Problem You Need To Move Away From The Speakers Way Away. Try Lowering Your Highs Or Invest In A Feedback Eliminator They Are Like 89 Bucks But Obviously That Would Almost Cost As Much As The Mic Set. Anyways Feedback Is Made When A Microphone Can Hear Itself Maybe Try Headphone?

I have a m-audio buddy using a mlx 990. I have this hooked to 200 ohm peavy amp. The problem is I can barely touch the gain on the pre-amp or the amp without getting extreme feedback.

It appears that the condenser microphones that are omni directional are too sensitive to process thru an amplifier. I used an mlx 991 directional condenser microphone and though still very sensitive, I was able to avoid the feedback. According to the company condenser microphones are used more for recording and not so much for live stage.

Problems with my MXL 990

Sounds like the frame of the microphone itself has become ungrounded. You could try VERY
carefully disassemble the mic and check for a bad ground or a bad wire connecting to the mic
body.

Problems with my MXL 990 (radio)

Luis
I guarantee you the antennas are most likely the culprit. Your only solution is to have a tech check the unit, OR purchase an inline RF filter from Radio Shack. It is also possible that you have a capacitor or other component going bad, that is causing the unit to heterodyne and become a nice front end for a radio receiver.

You do have other microphones, and they do not do this. Averages says it is most likely the microphone has an issue or its design. I have one of these MXL 990s too, and my mic began motorboating a few months ago while I was trying to record with it. It may be a quality issue with these mics. They aren't complicated though, any component electronic tech should be able to check it out.
