I had the same problem. Almost exactly a year to the date that I purchased this device, it started freezing and locking up to the point that it didn't work at all, no matter how many times I replaced the battery.
Just now I went to the RCA website and downloaded the latest firmware (v 4.07), following the instructions carefully to upgrade the player. As a measure of caution, I checked the box to format the whole device too. Now it seems to be working again, but not sure for how long.

My Lyra does the exact same thing...what i do is i pull the batteries out for a second and the unfreezes the device...then i delete the song that froze my device....then i reload the song..if it freezes again delete that song from ur computer them find a better music provider because most likely the song was corruped
Did you try formatting it recently?
If yes, download the latest firmware and update it.
If no, give some more details. Does it have a HOLD/LOCK switch on the sides somewhere.
Pls check and let me know.
The most probable cause that I see happening to people with the same item is the fact that somewhere between uses, the setup files in the device itself gets corrupted. When this happens, you're pretty much screwed. You can't access them because it won't let you, you can't format it because it won't let you, you're left with a dead mp3 player. Sorry, but you need to get a new one. The other one is trash.
connect lyra to computer
go to my computer on your start menu
lyra will show up on other devices or portable devices
double click on the lyra icon
this will bring up another lyra icon right click on that
go down to the option format and select that
you will lose all of your music
solved my problem two hours after it started
Hmm... guest that post is worthless.
Okay, first of, go to http://www.rca.com/manuals.. perhaps it SHOULD come up as guest states, however it does not.
Now go here:
Those are all of the downloads for that unit.
And for the manual:
look at the bottom. Digital Audio Players
then expand to MP3. A full list of models. Hoewver the RD2212 is not listed.
Good news though, I posted to get the SOLVED! vote so here goes..
