Hi ront922...
Your problem is not the fluidmaster 540, the problem is the flapper valve.
Replace your flapper valve because it is malfunctioning, it is different from you fill valve and only connected to the fill valve.

The fluidmaster 540 IS a flapper valve, and it is not easy to adjust.

New toilet 540 fluidmaster water in tank keeps topping off every half hour

The problem may be the flapper that seals between the tank and bowl is leaking or the overflow pipe may have a crack in it. I wouled replace the flapper first and check the overflow pipe for cracks.
Hope this helps.

Regarding the Fluidmaster 540 flapper: Which way do I adjust (turn) the unit to get it to stay up for longer providing more water and power from the flush

I just bought the 540 flapper and had the same issue. It came set on number 1, and it didn't stay up for long at all -- completely inadequate. I adjusted it to number 10, and it is excellent. It took a while to figure out how to adjust it. The way you do it is to press in the two tiny tabs on the white plastic part that keep the white plastic from pulling out. Press them in one at a time with a small screw driver, and you can then pull the white plastic part out easily. Just rotate it to a higher number and press it back in. That's all there is to it. I don't know why they shipped it set to the smallest number.

My fluidmaster 400 anti siphon for toilet will not stop filling making pump run over and over

Hi turtlerose07...

Sounds like you have one or two problems with the fluidmaster 400.
1...The float is set too high allowing the water to overflow into the overflow pipe and allowing your pump to run too much.
2...Flapper valve inside at the bottom of the tank is not sealing properly, thus allowing water to leak and causing the fluidmaster to keep trying to fill the tank with water and causing the pump to run too much.

We replaced our 3 toilets with the Fluidmaster 400 and have had problems ever since. All the toilets are running water every 5 to 10 minutes and my water bill has doubled. What can we do?

Hello- If you replaced old ball and rod set with new fluidmasters they will most likely need to be adjusted, not all toilet tanks are of equal height. You will have to adjust water height, meaning you must keep water level below fill tube located in center of the toilet tank. Adjustment is done from bottom of the fluidmaster, they screw in and out to adjust height. You will notice threads along the bottom part of the fluid master, on the inside of the tank, they adjust up & down! Goodluck!

Hi, American Standard uses a special large type of flapper that is designed for it. If I recall correctly,
It is black plastic with a device designed to delay the closing of the flap. It also has a special chain that is not like other flappers. Home Depot should stock these flappers. Fluidmaster makes a version of it that they sell.
Hope this helps,
Best Regards,

The chain needs to be attached to the tank lever arm. The idea is that when you depress the handle pulling up on the tank lever it will open the flapper and release the float at the same time.

Attaching the chain to the tank lever should be the solution.

Toilet flapper closes too fast, can't figure out the best position to adgust the chain.

See this PDF document link below for a product from Fluidmaster which allows adjustment for the time for the flapper valve to remain open after flushing:
