My WD3200 My Passbook is not recognized on my computer (running Windows 7), however it comes up as "initio default controller" in devices and printers. How do I get it working? Of note: I have another exact model that works just fine. Both model: WD3200C032-002

Thank you, SookCampton for your advice, however I got desperate and took the unit apart. When I did I noticed that the wire harness was not plugged into the harddrive. plugged it in and everything works great. Even still had movies from 1998 (Last time used) on it.

Thank you, SookCampton, but I got desperate and took the unit apart. I noticed that the wire harness was not connected to the harddrive. Plugged it in and and everything works lovely.

Try other usb port, or other computer and see whether the hdd is detected. If still not, try to go to device manager ( http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000833.htm ), and then assign a drive letter to the hdd. After that, try to access it from Computer, if not able to access it, format it (use quick format) and then use this file recovery program to recover your files.

Dose it show up as drive letter E:/ under device manager in disk drives?(Check out:right clicking my computer icon on your desktop, select disk manager)
If so,try right clicking on my computer and selecting map network drive.(You'll get the same results by right clicking on network neighborhood icon on your desktop and selecting map network drive.)This is the method many people use to assign a drive name (i.e.,letter) to a drive. Then you can recover data from hard drive with data recovery software like Tenorshare Data Recovery. It can recover data after deeply scanning your hard drive to look for lost data. You can get it here: http://www.any-data-recovery.com/product/datarecoveryprofessional.htm

Shows up as "Initio Combo Device Class" not a "Disk Drive"

RESOLVED the ISSUE...!!

Hi, Yesterday I get into similar problem of having my USB Drive ( WD passport Elite 320gb ) not being detected by my PC and as soon as I connect to it, Initio Combo device class drivers gets loaded and Drive do not show up in the device list...!!
I tried several options.1. Freezed my hard drive for 12 hrs in the freezer. It did not help me today.2. I have opened the USB drive shell ( becareful, I have damaged it.. see the instructions before you try t ). You can find the 2.5' HDD inside and there will be SATA to USB bridge adapter. I was having doubt on this bridge unit as I read through several blogs.3. luckily I have a unused 2.5' Laptop HDD. So I have removed this bridge unit carefully and tried to connect to my HDD. If the bridge is good, my HDD must be detected right away..But it is the same problem.. It did not work.. Hence I have confirmed that it is the bridge problem..
4. I bought a Rs. 250/- ( 5$ ) 2.5 SATA casing that is available in the market to use the 2.5' SATA HDD through USB. ( actually I do not know where I can buy only the bridge..hence bought the entire unit..which is still cheaper )
5. From the new unit, I have the USB to SATA bridge, which I have connected to my WD HDD SATA USB hard drive... Bingo.........It is detected by OS and I have started copying my important data immediately...
6. This Unit comes with a casing ..hence you may continue using this case... But some units may not fit well..still the bridge is usable..!!

I GOT all my data..with just Rs.250/- ( $5 ) ..I am happy to try this on my own..!!

Good luck with your drive..!!

My USB can't recognized. The recommendation is this: "Try reconnecting the device. If Windows still does not recognize it, replace the device." The device works on other computers or laptops,...

Hi,

Here are some steps which you can try. It is not always that the device is defective. Maybe the generic USB controller/driver needs to be uninstalled then reinstalled or the USB port itself is broken.

- Go to Device Manager -> Right click USB Controller -> select Scan for Hardware Changes.
To go to the Device Manager in xp (Start -> Run -> type devmgmt.msc -> press Enter or OK), in Vista and Windows 7 ( Start -> type devmgmt.msc on the start search box -> press Enter)

- Access BIOS setup (either Del, F2, F10...depending on the laptop brand) then look for the option to restore default BIOS settings.

- Go to the Device Manager and unistall everything under the USB Controller then restart the unit. It should automatically reinstall the driver. Try to use multiple USB devices if possible.

- If the above steps will not work, you're USB port may be defective already.

I hope this helps. Please reply if one or any of these steps resolved your issue for the benefit of other users having the same problem as yours.

Regards.
