Had this problem last week. Maybe caused by an update. I had to totally remove all the HP rubbish from the system. Used the L2 or L4 tool on the disc, then reinstalled from the new downloaded file. All okay except it can't see the contents of the cartridges (no real problem). Until today when it says again the printer is disconnected.....BUT everything still works, print, copy, scan! Hope this helps.

1. Go to HP's website for your printer driver, or click here http://goo.gl/724hL. 2. Select your operating system. 3. Click Next 4. A list of options will appear 5. Click on the plus (+) sign next to Driver 6. Click on the Driver software to begin the download. 7. You will also notice that you can click on the CD to order another one, but no need to, unless you have a very slow or unstable internet connection. 8. Attempts to print on HP Deskjet F4280 shut down my programs

Sounds like the drivers are not installing properly. Are you installing through the CD or downloading the drivers from the HP website. Since a lot of the new drivers are no longer supporting XP you will need to download a scrubber utility and delete all of the pre installed drivers and attempt to reinstall through a manual installation of the drivers.
