I have a western digital WD1600 WD Caviar SE Serial ATA Hard Drive in my Desktop PC. Yesterday i noticed a loud clicking when i started up, and shut down my PC. Now today when i started my computer i got a screen that said there was a memory issue, but my Ram is fine. I also noticed that the serial ATA cable connection to the back of the hard drive looked a little melted. Is there any way to fix this issue, or do i need to replace the whole HD?

This click noise was it coming from inside the hard drive or was it power data click
this melted lead will cause you problems it needs to be replaced
replace that lead and check all other leads from motherboard to hard drive mke sure connections are clean and secure also make sure your ram modules and cmos battery are clean with secure seatings if the lead melted must be getting hot
blow all dust from your computer you could use a fine air blower making absolutely sure there is no moisture in the air lines
if you need more help with this post a reply
hope this helps you

Better to replaced the hard drive, co'z once you heard a loud sound on it, that means that the drive is now having a physical damage, if you the hard drive still working, it will not stay longer due to physical damage inside of the hard drive.

I wish to us a WD1600 (caviar) hard drive fopr extra storage in my pc the drive came from my old PC there are eight pins to choose from. Where do I place the jumper?

Well, if this hard drive is SATA and looks like this:

Then you don't need to worry about the jumpers at all, the hard drive is ready for use in your PC.

However, if it's IDE, which looks like this:
ikayos_0.jpg

You will need to move the pins to the "Slave" setting, and on Western Digital drives it is one set of vertical pins going away from the 4 pin power input, the above picture is set for Slave mode, and can be used as a reference.

You can't unless you can back it up with a usb stick that would be big enough to hold it.

My Computer did not access Western Digital Hard Disk, Model No. WD 1600 AABB Caviar SATA.

Good morning! Please make sure that the drive’s power and SATA cables are properly connected. If the Serial ATA host adapter card is installed in a 64-bit PCI slot on the system motherboard, move the card to a 32-bit slot.

Verify that only one power cable (either SATA or legacy) is connected to the drive. Check to see that the power connector and SATA interface cable are securely attached and that the
SATA host adapter card is properly seated in the PCI slot.

The Serial ATA interface connects each drive in a point-to-point configuration with the built-in SATA port on the motherboard or with the SATA host adapter card; therefore eliminating the master/slave relationship as required with EIDE. Each drive utilizes its own
cable for data transfer rates. Jumper settings for Western Digital Serial ATA hard drives are mainly used for enterprise storage environments.

Most third party controller cards and RAID adapters are recognized as a SCSI device under Device Manager. This is normal and will not affect your drive or system performance.

To verify if the Serial ATA drive is recognized by the system, Right-click on the My Computer icon, select Properties, left-click on the Hardware tab, and click on Device Manager in the window. Double-click on Disk Drives. Your new Western Digital Serial ATA drive should be listed as a "SCSI Disk Device" or "Serial ATA Disk Device." If not, make sure that all cables are securely attached and that your system BIOS has been properly configured. regards
