I opened up the dvd casing, and saw a plastic bar trapping the CD under it. I can't see any small switch. Previously have already switched the power on and off but still no movement.

Not sure if this is the same issue but when disc tray retracts I can hear the disc drive cycling. I opened and inspected unit and found that the rubber band used to retract then raise the disc drive into place was slipping. Evidently it has stretched and starts to slip when trying to raise the drive unit up into place. Anyone know where I can get the rubber band.

How do I reset the DVD player?  That was one of the solutions posted.  Is it as simple as unplugging over night?  As a hand me down from parents, I was lazy and left it in the car for several months (shame on me).  Now that I finally decided to bring it inside to use after plugging in the DVD player it shows the red standby button.  When you push the on/standby button, it remains red.  Sometimes it looks like it is trying to start (no noise) with the center screen on the DVD player showing ---(division symbol)---. Can't seem to get the DVD tray to open either.  Any suggestions?

I just purchased a dvd hd player phillips dvp5960/37 I also own a 37 inch panasonic tv. I can see normal movies ok and sound is good but when I put an HD movie in I get nothing but spinning. This happened with another dvd player that I bought and I figured it was a problem with the DVD player so I bought a different one which is the phillips. Does anyone have a clue as to why I cannot play an HD movie on this thing. I also have a bell satellite dish and it plays the television HD channels fine. ???? im confused!!!

I too am having a simliar problem with my DVC880D. Were you able to resolve? $35 to just have a local repair look at it, and that's not including parts. For that price, I'm half way to a newer unit (and anything other than a SYLVANIA).

I did power down. That was the initial resolution Sylvania's support gave me. Did not work.

I've opened the case to see if I could isolate the problem, but I have no idea what I'm looking at. If it was a computer DVD drive, then I'd be good to go :P

I'll play with the dead one to see if I can get it working, but I'm not too concerned now. For the price they want to just to look at it ($35) I bought a new RCA DVD with DIVX.

Note to self: Never buy Sylvania.

Have you tried to power cycle the unit? These units have small computers in them and from time to time need a power cycle. Un plug it and let it sit over night then try it again. Some times a simple reset can cure its ilness. It may also have a timming problem with the door. WHen it was open did it get bumped? it could be off track and thing its open when its actualy closed because it has a timming problem. Try a power cycle first.

Your problem is the small switch that a small boss hits when the doors closed to tell the unit the door is closed.. Its eather the small boss is broken from the door or the switch blades cracked. If you feel comfortable to open small electronics you may be able to open and see if it is the tiny switch BUT highly NOT recomended as there are micro fine wires and ribbon cables inside this unit that can be easaly broken.Best thing to do is to take or send this unit to an authorized repair shop.

SOURCE: A Sony RDR-GX210 DVD player I can play a CD -

Hi Allan,

When you get no disk error, that is usually because of a problem with the optical laser lens that is dirty, faulty or opaque, and will start operating on certain disks better than others.

In that case you will hear disk spinning, whirring and clicking, but the TOC (table of content track at start of CD/DVD will not be read, therefore the error.

Whe this problem is starting you may be able to read only CD, DVD or Blue ray, or for example only DVD-R and not +R , or only to read and not to write and so on. After more prolonged usage , often the unit goes losing the rest of functions, and ends up not reading anything at all.

In your case the lens does not work on DVD , but only on CDs for the reasons above , that is quite common.

If instead there is no noise, and disk does not spin at all , then there is a faulty motor, or the motor micro-switch is bad. This situation is far less common than the lens problem.

Try first using a CD/DVD or Blue ray lens cleaner disk to clean the lens. If that does not work you will need to disassemble the drive , and clean lens directly with q tips and isopropyl alcohol, or to replace the CD/DVD lens, or the whole drive unit.

Have you changed programs that you use to burn VCDs?
(Perhaps the program was updated?)

Perhaps trying a different program to make the VCD will work for you.

Also; when is the last time you cleaned the DVD player lens?

Cd/Rw playback CD player in lounge room won't play burned cd's...

Hi.

You need to burn your CDs in Audio format. That means that you cannot just burn your MP3 or WMA files, but you need to use the program which can convert those files to WAV format and write them so that ordinary CD players can reproduce them. Nero is such a program, among others.

Will Not Play CD-Rs Part Deux

Checked specs- YES -supposed to play MP3's. Did you try other MP3 Audio disks in the DVD? You can try the MP3 disk in your computer to make sure it is OK. If it plays in the computer, have to suspect a problem with the DVD unit - probably the converter IC.
