Hello,
I have the Archos 504 and it is coming up with Recovery ( code 2 ). I have tried all 3 options of format disk, repair and No recovery but it just keeps going back to the same screen, have tried resetting it but still does same thing, PLEASE HELP.
My Archos 604 WIFI has the same problem. I've reviewed in the forum and the only suggestion I found was to review the hard disk connection, I've opened the Archos and I can confirm that it's correct. At present the problem persists and I don't know what to do. Please, any help?
Send them back to Archos if they are still under warranty. If not, you're out of luck because they'll charge you about US$140 to repair the hard drive + postage.

hey, did you sort this out? If so, how?cause I have the exact same problem...If I manage to be fast enough to press the button to "recover" or "format" before the screen freezes then it just goes into recovery for ages but accomplishes nothing. My computer doesn't recognize my archos so oI can't upload anything or update anything.?????
When I switch on my Archos device, the following message is displayed: "Would you like to recover your system?" What does it mean and what should I do?
You are on the recovery mode screen. It means that your hard drive has been damaged and must be repaired or formatted. With this system recovery mode, you will have to select between "Repair Disk" and "Format Disk". Start by selecting "Repair Disk" and follow the instructions displayed on the screen. See the full PDF manual (available on the Archos web site) on how to use the Repair and Format options.
If repairing the disk did not work, try formatting the disk by selecting "Format Disk". Note that the formatting will erase all data.
If you still cannot restart your Archos after trying a system recovery, you should contact Archos technical support.
you have to format your hd. for this conect your dvd player to pc. there is coming your hdd with a letter disk . click with the right button mouse and give format. after formating make sure to put some video from media player as described in your manual. (videos must be codec compatible to play). if is repeated same thing check your audi and video setting if nothing.... good luck i dont know another solution.
If you chose any of these options already your Os is gone..
try this solution
I fixed my son's 605 4 GB had Recovery code
(104) on it. This might work for other error codes too. These are the steps i
followed * Use thecomputerfor this
process that you always used for this archos Archos should be plugged in to Pc
before starting the process. * Download the firware Upgrade 2.1 * Plug the Archos toPc * When the white option screen comes up pick the
format disk * Wait until all done do not pick any option on
archos after format is done Pc should recognize your archos in 5 seconds * Put the firmware in root section of the archos not in any folder. * Safely remove the usb for Archos from your pc
first and then unplug thecable. * Do not pick any option on the Archos screen * Just turn it off from the power button by
holding it until it turns off * Wait about 5 minutes and plug it back to pc * it will come up with white screen again but this
time it will start Update you will see the progress bar moving, wait until it
is all done, it will shut off. Turn it back on and your archos will be back to normal
I had the same problem and manage to solve it. You need to do the following
a. go to Archos website and download latest firmware and save on your pc b. turn on 504 and select repair - unit not connected to pcm you will see a screen where you wil be prompted to press DONE (but DONT press it yet!!!!) c. connect 504 to pc and wait until pc recognise it (it will recognize it this time) d. copy firmware from pc and paste it to 504 root directory. e. press done on 504. now when the device restarts you just select Repair and that should work. :)
I got the same message when I took out the hard drive. I'm sure this will void any warrant, but maybe you should open it up and make sure the hard drive ribbon is secure.

e. press done on 504. that should work. I've spent the best part of 10 hours looking for a solution to the dreaded recovery code 4. The problem is a corrupt os. I hope you're as lucky as me.
I still have a problem with mine though...a screen that blink constantly.
