When I try to turn the TV on, the red ON/OFF led comes on (front panel) both manually and via the remote, but nothing happens. VCR starts playing upon casette is loaded, but stops in a couple of seconds. Kids told me they saw vertical lines for a couple of seconds the other day and the unit went dead. We can not turn it on now.
What is the problem? Is it the tube? If it is, can I change it myself, or that is not possible?

Re: TV is dead
Could be many things, possibly a vertical IC failure, or bad soldered joints, or problems with the power supply.
Considering your questions, if theres a problem with the tube, you don't want to change it, it won't be worth the expense, and since you're asking, then you probably shouldn't try anything with it.
VERY dangerous, more or less like a microwave. TVs store very high voltages even when unplugged.
What you could try is to unplug the TV over night, maybe the TV needs a bit of a discharge. also try another power outlet. other then that, you better take it to repair shop.
Good luck

Hey If you have tried Using remote and side pannels Have you tried another TV to see if its the Cable? Also The clicking sound is normal its the TV's Power-source starting. That might be the TV output channel. I found these instructions in a Sanyo manual:
How to set the DVD+VCR's RF output channel
1.
Set the TV to the VCR channel (3 or 4) depending upon the selected channel.
2.
When the DVD+VCR is turned off, press and hold CHANNEL (V/v) on the front panel for more than five seconds. It will turn itself on and "RF03" or "RF04" appears in the dis-play window.
3.
Press CHANNEL (V/v) on the front panel or CH/TRK(v/V) on the remote control to change the RF output channel (CH 03 or CH 04).
4.
Turn off the DVD+VCR.
Press SET BUTTON and at the same time, the appliance you want to set( TV, VCR,Aux...etc). The LED should stay on.. then press on the SET BUTTON again ... the led will blink fast... then press ( in front of TV, of else).. the POWER BUTTON to see what happens, if nothing happens, then press the +CHANNEL BUTTON once, and press power again. Repeat this until it turn off. Then press the appliance button (VCR,TV,AUX, etc...), this will stop the LED to blink and your appliance will be set.

You say didn't do anything, Like did you hear a squealing sound or did you see led lights on front of panel or just dead nothing? If dead and nothing then look for fuse blown in power supply if not then there maybe a small sound coming out of set when you press power if so then the power supply is trying to start up then you will have to look elsewhere like horizontal or convergence or vertical areas.
sounds like it may be tripping line output transistor gone, due to dry joints on the base driver transformer, just check if you have a red light at front and its constant or pulsing
