My TV turns off automatically after just a few seconds. If I unplug and replug it in, it re-sets and I can turn it on again. This worked for several months but now it never stays on for more than a few seconds.

Re:
Could be noumerous things:
1. check power supply, too high or too low voultage may cause TV to shut down. measure it to detarmine if power supply is faulty.
2. check convergence board. If either of these 2 fuses on the convergence panel are open then replace the STK output devices PLUS check for any resistors in that circuit that may have overheated and changed value. Use actual fuse values, putting in a
larger fuse, even to try and diagnose problem, will cause more severe damage.
3. Check for bad solder connects on the PC board in the area of the power cord and related components.
good luck

It sounds like bad connections in the high voltage transformer and the horizontal driver transformer on the main board, if the tv is more than 10 years old you are further off putting your money towards a new set.
Press the the cursor key up followed by down and power the TV off with the remote or the TV itself. Please use the original remote for this. Unplug the TV for a few seconds...replug and power the TV on. The second thing to try...press the cursor key left followed by the right key. Power the the TV off with the remote or the TV itself. Unplug for a few seconds...replug and power up the TV. Some of these TVs left the factory in the service mode. The fix is pretty simple. Thanks asking and show a few hands of support!

look closely at the electrolytic capacitors in the power supply. If you see any with the tops bulging out, replace them. Especially the 1000mfd caps labeled EC9, EC10, EC18, EC19, EC20
It is a software problem sony was fixing for free untill 03/01/08
You can unplug your set from the outlet for 30 seconds and it will work fine untill several hours of use acrue again. Found this out on the sony website. hope it helps.
You first need to rplace the outlet if it sparks where the surge protector is plugged in as it should not spark for any reason. then you need to make sure thast its not the outlet causing your problem by running an long extensition corn or moving the set to a differant outlet.
