Dell.com supply "rescue disks" as do many sites on the net. I think that is possibly the only way to go. Errors on the hard drive possibly caused the error in the file system, or the master file table has been corrupted. Hope it helps.
check if computer is mute, check in sound properties if speaker headphones is selected, check if sound device is detected in device manager. try uninstall reinstall sound driver. to perform factory image, press F8 up to 10 times during the DELL LOGO, select repair your computer, select language then click next, click Dell Factory image Restore.
You can revert back to Factory Settings only if your laptop came with a preinstalled OS. You can Restore to Factory Backup using the disc provided with your laptop. If you dont have one, you can just format your drive and clean install any OS you like.

if you have windows xp then you need to turn your computer as soon as you do that before you see the windows xp logo hold down the control key and keep tapping f11 key.it should take you to the screen fro factory settings and if it is windows vista then you can go ahead and press f8 and then choose repair my computer,hit enter which will then prompt you to login in once you log in it will tell you to choose the options from the options listed below choose the one which says restore factory default...you computer will be restored to factory settings..
theres a solution to this. all you do is. hold the ctrl for 20 seconds then as you. turn power on press f-1 or f-11 botton press f-11 botton 16 times semi guickly. and follows the promps worry not about any files or music being missed. theyll all be there.
