I work in a video store and we have had a tv rather sizeable tv sitting in the corner gathering dust. i turned it on a few days ago to realise the reason it was never on was because someone had left a speaker on top of the screen for quite some time. the magnet inside the speaker has warped the picture at the top and bottom, also the red greens and blues have separated. any ideas on how i could fix it?

Hi
the convergence ic's are ususally the problem. part no is stk4278l and they are located in front of the set behind the speaker grill. there are also teo fuses on this board that should be checked
good luck

This is probably a heat issue (assuming you aren't the one turning off the TV and aren't having regular power failures). This TV has two fans to help keep the components cool; if the temperature increases, the TV will shut down to protect those components. Also check if the ventilation slots are blocked and clean the dust off them. (When you have the TV open, you can blow out dust as well - much like dust removal for a desktop CPU.)
Hi, Press Info / Display button on TV remote, on-screen display will disappear. Sony TV Remote is required for that function, other remote wont work. Thanks.
Try to cleaning it from inside first thing without switching it on as sometimes power is stored for upto 30 -60 secs (POWER SWITCHED OFF)- maybe alot of dust is gathered & messing with circuits, use a hair dryer or a cloth - then switch it on.
if it doesnt work then it maybe a fualty transformer - its difficult to know without doing a few checks.
Lamp in TV got weak and TV needs new lamp. Lamp replacement procedure is written in instruction manual and buy should buy Sony original lamp from Sony Accessories Store for your Sony TV.
Projection TV sets are known to have two common problems. The first problem that is common to these sets is convergence failure. When this happens the TV will usually look 3D, Wavy/Distorted, etc. It may also shutdown and blink an error code.
The second common problem with Projection TV sets is dull video, halos around objects, white looking video, or red overpowers the screen. This is commonly caused by the fluid in the lens being clouded overs.

The spots are from dust in the optical assy. It would need to be replaced because the only way to fix the part would be to disasemble it in a dust free room.
I dont think Sony has a "12" blink code, the highest (being in a newer set) is a "10", might try rechecking that, as for the code 2 that is an OCP, usually a shorted horizontal output transistor/Convergence IC's/High Voltage distribution block. My bet is the Block as HV tends to break down parts like that over time You must be careful when removing the anode leads as you can break the tip off or burn something up if not done right.
