I have a new memory card, a Toshiba 16GB, and my Kodak C340 says the card needs formatting. The camera will not format the card. Can formatting be done on my computer? If so, how?

The C340 works with MMC and SD cards. Your 16GB card is a SDHC card. While it fits into the slot, it is electronically incompatible and will not work. You need to use a MMC or SD card, which top out at 2GB.

Kodak EasyShare C340,came with 512mbCard have tried two ScanDisk 4gb cards. It will not format either,,not locked. Do I need a special card for this camera

The C340 works with SD cards, which top out at 2GB. Your new 4GB cards are actually SDHC cards. While they fit into the slot, they are electronically incompatible and will not work with this camera. You need to use SD cards, 2GB and smaller.

I would check your C663 manual to make sure your camera is capable of reading a 16GB card. Because thats a fairly large drive for such a a legacy camera I would also insert the card in your PC and format it there to make sure it is functional. Maybe copy some files on it and delete it to make sure the card is working properly.

No. Can you get into the camera menu when you turn the camera on? If so, go to "format" by way of the menu rather than clicking on continue. Also, be sure the slide switch on the side of the card is in the unlocked position.

#1
Insert your memory card into your computer's reader if you have one. If not, you can purchase a multi-format USB Memory Card reader from Amazon.com or Buy.com
#2
Open up 'My Computer'. You should see it under the list of available drives.
#3
Check its contents first to make sure that you have the right drive.
#4
In 'My Computer', right-click on the drive and choose 'Format'.
#5
Leave all the options as they are and click on 'Start'. This is a non-reversible process so make sure this is what you truly wanted to do in the first place.
#6
Once the process is completed, take the memory card out and insert it into your Digital Camera or any other device. Try to browse to it to make sure it works fine now.

I have a Toshiba 8 GIG memory card. I used it

When you removed the card from the computer, did you remember to use the "safely remove hardware" procedure? Also, you should never wait until your card is full before downloading...you run the risk of the card becoming corrupted. Your options now...1. Get a separate card reader and see if you can download your pics with it.2. If not, take the card to a store like Walmart that has a Kodak Picture kiosk machine. Insert your card and you should be able to see all your pics. From there, you can make a cd of them. Then, format your card in your camera to return it to factory specs.

Balo3, the memory card that you are using is not compatible on your camera, try the 1GB SD card or less.
