Question about Samsung Spinpoint MP4 HM640JJ 640GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache 2.5' SATA 3.0Gb/s Internal Notebook Hard Dri... SATA II Hard Drive

I have a Samsung HM640JJ HDD. I bought the drive as an external in an enclosure. The drive has stopped spinning all-together. I even tried to put the HDD in my laptop but will not spin. Samsung will not entertain my warranty as it was an OEM manufacture for another company and I do not know who to contact. The drive manufacture date is April 2010. What can I do to get the drive spinning again and fix it.

    Thanks for the reply. I did try and put it in the freezer wrapped in zip lock bags. After 24 hours I plugged it in my PC and nothing. No spin. I did call Samsung and argued that they stamped the drive with their name and now it was their responsibility. Finally they gave me a RMA and have agreed to replace the drive under the warranty.

If the hard drive can't be detected by your computer, you can try this way.
Put the hard drive in a plastic bag to be compatible for the freezer. Freezing sometimes works to revive a dying hard drive, at least for a short time(Probable just about 20 minutes), but be sure that the bag is sealed tightly so that condensation and ice crystals don't form. Put it in your freezer for 24 hours that will do the trick. While it's still cold, plug it into your computer.And you may be able to view it in 'my computer'.
If it shows up in 'my computer' as a drive letter(like E: drive) but you can't access it,you can recover data from hard drive with data recovery program.

it is not uncommon for external hard drive enclosures to fail. If its not working on multiple computers, this is probably the case. try it in 1 more computer and if it still doesn't work, I would do the following:
1. Open the enclosure to expose the actual Hard Drive and obtain the model number and note the size. if its a laptop hdd, its 2.5". if its a full size hdd like in a desktop pc, its 3.5". the enclosure may be screwed together but likely snaps together.
2. Google the model # to determine the interface and speed (likely SATA 3.0gb/s but could be SATA 6.0gb/s
3. Go to Newegg.com or Amazon.com and buy a new external hard drive enclosure ($5-$35) with the same interface, speed, and size as your hdd (use the filters on the left to narrow your search)

It sounds like the usb port on the drive itself is shot. You can actually take apart the case and pull just the harddrive out and use a hotswap usb harddrive reader and get to your files again

If your talking about the cable, replace the cable. If your talking about on the external hard drive, either replace the drive if it's under warranty or go buy a new external hard drive enclosure, open the samsung HDD, put the drive in the new enclosure. Opening the enclosure will typically void the warranty.

Lacie 250 gig HD will not show light on front when switched on, also no sound comes from it, it seems completly DEAD, this happened overnight, at end of night all was OK, in the morning it would not even...
the power regulator inside the external enclosure is probably dead the drive itself may still be intact,you can remove the dribe from the enclosure and run it as an internal drive if you have any free ports or you can buy a new enclosure for it and it should run fine.

Unable to connect my WD pass port to any computer MDL: WD1600XMS-00 SN WXE207612581 The blue light is on and lit but dont appear on the computer together with C Drive
If the blue light is lit, then it might be the USB cord. If you have a spare USB cord, try it and see if that works.
If could also be the USB port on the external drive enclosure. In which case, you may have to open the external enclosure and get a HDD dock or another external enclosure to access your drive.

It is quite easy, do not worry.
You only need to bought and USB enclosure, here is a link to many products on ebay

then you have to connect your hard drive inside the enclosure and the enclosure to your computer using the usb cable and that's it.
Just be carefull about the enclosure, I guess it is a Hard drive from a desktop, is in it? because some enclosure are for laptop's hard drive.
Also you need to know if your hard drive is SATA or IDE, IDE is the normal gray bus cable with fourty some pins, and the SATA it is a really small cable (I do not use technicims to not confuse you even more).

Also, there are some adapters from IDE/SATA to USB that you can buy in your local computer store (do not go to bestbuy, compusa, ... they only sell external hd), or also get it from ebay.
The only diference between the enclosure and the adapter is that the enclosure looks better :D, and the adapter is just a bunch of cables.

HDD from dropped laptop
Could it be a power issue? Some older laptop HDs need more power than one USB port can provide and won't spin up properly. If you have a cable with your HD enclosure which had two USB connectors on the end, make sure you plug both into ports on your laptop.

When they don't spin up correctly, you tend to hear them clicking as they try to spin & then cut out. Have a listen to it when you plug it in & see what you can hear.

Simple Drive
ive had to open the enclosure and recover the files with success many times due to bad usb to ide card in enclosure.

i got him a new 2.5' hdd enclosure and new laptop hdd with 5 yr warr seagate.
