I HAVE APPLE IPOD SHUFFLE 512MB
THE IPOD SHOW ME THE FOLLOWING MESSAGE.
"IPOD" COULD NOT BE RESTORED.AN UNKNOWN ERROR OCCURED

    In April this year, I encounted the same problem. Since I had been using iPod shuffle the first generation for almost 3 years, I thought maybe it had come to the end of its short life span. Then I bought the new generation iPod shuffle... The 1st generation was still in my drawer. Few days ago, I plugged it to the desktop and tried any luck. Then I found this website... PROBLEM SOLVED by following pulkachu's method! I dunno what to say, but GREAT THANKS! YOU'RE A GENIUS!

I found a way to solve this, you have to google for a program called ipod reset utility or, you can search here:

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1238



Either way, install, follow the instrucions and you can probably save your ipod (note; I saved my ipod on a mac. Haven't tested transfering songs from my PC an this moment)

I had the same problem as error 1442 when I tried to restore my ipod. I used the following software to reset to factory settings and it's perfectly working.

according to the apple website here is some help with the solution.
this is taken straight from apple.

Symptoms When restoring or updating an iPod in iTunes 7 or later, you may see a dialog reporting "An unknown error has occurred" followed by the error number 1415, 1417, 1418, 1428, 1429, 1430, 1436 or 1439.
Products Affected iPod, iPod mini, iPod shuffle, iPod nano, iTunes 7 for Windows, iTunes 7 for Mac, iTunes 8 for Mac, iTunes 8 for Windows
Resolution If you are experiencing these errors, begin by updating to the latest version of iTunes. When you have the current version of iTunes, try the following:
  • Disconnect and reconnect your iPod and then attempt to restore.
  • Restart your computer and then attempt to restore your iPod.
  • Disable or Enable Disk Use on your iPod and then attempt to restore.
  • Try connecting your iPod to a different USB port and then attempt to restore.
  • Remove any third-party USB devices you have connected to your computer (it is not necessary to remove your keyboard or mouse).
  • If you use Windows, re-register .dll files as described in article iTunes displays -50 error message when syncing iPod on Windows XP
