Determine the current firmware version 1. Press Menu . 2. Press the down arrow to highlight INFORMATION, and then press OK. 3. Press the down arrow to highlight PRINT CONFIGURATION, and then press OK to print. The firmware datecode is listed on the Configuration page in the section called Device Information. The firmware datecode has this format: YYYYMMDD XX.***.X. The first string of numbers is the date, where YYYY represents the year, MM represents the month, and DD represents the date. For example, a firmware datecode of that begins with 20061125 represents November 25, 2006. Download new firmware from the HP Web site To find the most recent firmware upgrade for the product, go to www.hp.com/go/ ljp4010series_software or www.hp.com/go/ljp4510series_software. This page provides instructions for downloading the new firmware version.

First thing to try is this, please go to control panel on the printer and to aministration menu. Scroll down to troubleshooting and find the PQ troubleshooting option and press ok. This will print a series of test prints. If these prints look OK then likely you have an issue with your driver. If they are faded, the second thing you need to do is check to make sure that your firmware revision is current. On the config page that prints with the pages just printed above, look on the upper left for firmware revision. Current version is 46.300.0. Download from here and install following the instruction in the readme file. Did it print OK before changing cartridges? If you installed remanufactured or 3rd party cartridges, the toner will not always provide the same quality of print.

See if the error is only occuring with a particular application or certain documents. Most times the error is related to the use of Adobe. If you have a network and are using a print server for all the printers, then the first thing I would do is load one of the problem printers locally on one or more pc's using tcp/ip and the driver being loaded on the local machine. See if you still have the issue. If not, then the print server may be causing issues. If you still have the issue, especially with the 4250, then I would contact hp tech support. Keep in mind if it is only happening with a certain application, HP will tell you to contact that vendor. One other note is that I have seen this type of error of the 4200 and 4300 series when users were printing lots of documents with foreign language characters in them. On those, though the firmware upgrade solved the isse.

Start by upgrading the Firmware. Go to www.hp.com, enter the printer type, select the OS, drill down to Firmware. Click Download. Click the README and please read it.
