When insterting a dvd-r disc in the unit it reads and says to reject the disc because playback feature may not be availible.
I want to dubb vcr to dvd but it will not accept the commands. THis is a new machine.
I have the ewr20v4 and i've already had the service upgrade allowing me to use up to 8x disc on the dvd-r. i called them because they are getting hard to find, as many are 16x or higher to ask if they had an upgrade or newer service pac....answer - nope. got told go to best buy as that is the most likely place to have the selection necessary vs kmart or walmart.
This unit here can only use DVD-R (2x or 4x) or DVD-RW (1x or 2x). Anything other than that will result in a disc error.
Also, check the error message it is giving you when you press record. It will be an E followed by some numbers. If it is an E4 and more numbers, then the unit needs to be serviced. You can try running a disc cleaner but if that does not work, then haveing the unit serviced is your best bet.
I am having the same problem with mine too - ewr20v5. I just talked to a customer service rep, and he said that to take a disc cleaner to it, and then if that does not work call for a firmware upgrade. That should take care of it. I asked if this is a recurring problem and he wa shemming and hawing about it and finally said "sort of". So in my opinion I think the Emerson folks know there is a problem and are hoping that everone just lets it go by the wayside. I will try to clean it this weekend and see if it works. If it doesn't then I will get the update and try that. If that doen's worj I anm probably going to just give it to Sal's Army or Goodwill, or just junk it. At that point, it is not worth the trouble - will probably just get a new one since they are so cheap now.

The DVD player is not reading any information.
If they are blank DVDs the playback feature will not be available until something is recorded on them,
If they are prerecorded discs, either the disc is not spinning, or the pickup is not reading the information.
Despite the mention of playback, do you mean this is when you put in a blank DVD to record? Are you just getting started with it? There are two sub-format of discs that can be used for recordings. Machines will support either DVD-R or DVD+R but recently some now take either. Check in the instruction manual which type yours uses (because if it supported both we'd have no problem) However, if this is about playback of your own previously recorded or commercially released discs (movies) then check a disc is clean and free from marks, blemishes and especially scratches. (Great things, optical discs but very touchy about the state of the surface because of the laser reading method) Next up is to clean the scanning lens in the machine. This is done easily with a Lens Cleaner disc kit available everywhere very cheap. Follow the instructions that will come with it. If no joy after this it's back to the shop - if guarantee still applies - or to a repairer if not. Get a quote and see how you feel about that or getting another recorder.
the message you are getting is the machines waay of telling you that it can not read that disc. which means you will have to burn your discs in a different format. or your are using a type of disc it does not recognize.
I have a DVD and VHS player in 1 and it was working well then all of a sudden the DVD player part just stopped playing. I stick in a disk and then it would read: disk error play back feature may not be available on this disk. And this disk is fine it plays in my daughters room in her 2 in 1 player. so What can I do? The VHS player works well. Help! I dont really want to buy a new one!
check to see if the disc spins......As in place the disc in the DVD player with the label in a position that is readable to you....Put the disc in close the tray and wait a few seconds. Open the tray and se if the disc actualy has moved. If it hasent then the motor is bad and not worth replacing!
