Re: set up a lap to ,
Fortunately, the wireless password and the router password are two different things :-)
Find the directions to your router and log into it by going to the gateway address...usually 192.168.1.1 or some address ending in 1. Go to the manage wireless section and it will either give you the current wireless password or let you change it. Make sure you write it down and save the changes and you should be able to get in via the wireless access.

Theencryption key secures your data from unauthorized access.
The router's password is a Passphrase or the WEP or WPA orWPA2 encryption key.
The Passphrase generates the WEP or WPA or WPA2 encryptionkey and this is in the router's wireless settings.
To connect to your wireless router, configure the router'swireless settings ie SSID, plus the WPAor WPA2 encryption key and then configure wireless cards in the laptops and orcomputers with these router's wireless settings. Then the laptops and desktopcomputers can communicate with your wireless router.

Welcome to Fixya. If you want to secure the network you all you need to do is to access the router settings page and put a security either WEP, WPA or WPA2 and a Network Key or Passphrase.
To access the router page you need a working computer that is connected to the router. To access the router page just open a browser then type 192.168.2.1, the Default password is blank
Click on Security under Wireless, Select WEP, WPA or WPA2 and personalize a Security Key or Network Key (Passphrase). Security Key serves as a password on the network.
If you have questions please let me know. Thanks for using Fixya.

The network key is an encryption key ie. WEP/WPA-PSK key. This key is configured in the wireless setup of the wireless access point or wireless router. The key can be a hexadecimal number but most people use a Passphrase. The Passphrase can be a phrase such as "I'm am so smart 12345" and this is used to generate the hexadecimal encryption key. For instructions on setting up and configuring the wireless security for your access point (this apply to wireless access points and wireless routers), please click in this link and follow my instructions :- http://www.fixya.com/support/r3559128-wireless_router_security
From your PC (not your laptop):

Now, try connecting wirelessly from your laptop, using the new security-key or passphrase.
You will be able to get the wep key or passphrase from the wireless router or access point.
To some routers, the SSID (wireless network name) and WEP keys are found underneath the router itself. It you cannot see any, then you will need to access the setup page of the router.
This depends on what is the brand of your router.
If you let me know the brand and model I might be able to help you in checking the settings.
If you dont remember your passphrase or network key, you need to access the router page to check the router wireless settings. make sure that your computer is directly connected to the router to check your passphrase
Step 1: Access the router’s web-based setup page Step 2: When the router’s web-based setup page appears, click Wireless Step 3: Click Wireless Security and take note of the current Security Mode Step 4: You will see your wireless network key or passphrase on this window
