Every DVI or VGA (with the provided adaptor) cable will work, just not both at the same time.

Will a kensington universal docking station work with my sony vaio pcg-7d2l

Yes it should if you are running Windows XP, Vista, 7 or 8. You just connect to the unit using a spare USB port on your laptop and a plug-plug USB cable. It has it's own power so you'll need a mains socket. This means you can unplug your laptop and leave any devices charging on the docking station USBs. Your laptop should auto-instal the station. I believe there is a table/support available which combines with this unit. There a varying prices for this unit so look around.

Auto detect analog

Hi Jessica,
Dell E228WFPC/E228WFP does support displays with 1920x1080 set resolution via DVI connection while it is restricted to validated Dell brand displays:
  • The restriction applies to resolution higher than 1680x1050 via DVI connection.
  • No restriction with VGA connection, which supports up to 1920x1200.

If you use a DVI connection set your computer's resolution to 1680x1050.

I have CMV 946D Monitor and i am trying to connect it to my laptop via DVI cable and it doesn't work. my laptop is already connect to another monitor using VGA cable. do i need any driver or does DVI...

Sorry, but you can use only one port at a time, not both, It is either DVI or VGA. If you want to drive two monitors, you need to lok for docking station with dual video card.

Drivers for Win 7?

It is likely that you are attaching the docking station with a laptop running Windows 7 OS. In this case you should visit the Kensington Europe website and download and install the latest software version of K33926 Kensington Universal Notebook Docking Station with VGA/DVI and Ethernet Software for Windows 7, Vista, and XP (5.2.22372.0) Note that this is a combo software that includes the drivers for both the video and ethernet.

Yes, but you will need a dvi to vga adapter.
Or one of the monitor must have a dvi input.

Running two external monitors

Okay. Thanks for the info too...

I looked at the user's guide for this laptop and see exactly what you're saying.
I found it here: http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/MacBook_Pro_Users_Guide.pdf

So, the laptop comes with a DVI to VGA adapter because the only port on this system that will allow you to connect an external display is one that connects to a DVI port (in short, you don't have a VGA port).

moz-screenshot-3.jpgmoz-screenshot-4.jpgOkay, you have a couple of options here:

  1. You can purchase a docking station which, depending on where you buy it from, will be more expensive than the other options. If you decide to purchase one, first make sure that it will provide the ports that you need. For example, my docking station has one DVI port and one VGA port. If and when I connect a second monitor, I will connect it to the DVI port using a single DVI to VGA adapter (as I don't have any flat panels that connect directly to a DVI port). 63efdf2.jpg If you purchase the docking station, make sure it has both the DVI and VGA or you're stilling floating up the same creek without a paddle.
2. You can't use the cable that came with the laptop because it only connects to the DVI port
of your laptop with one VGA connector on the other end, therefore, supporting only one
external monitor. You need either a DVI to DVI and VGA adapter or a DVI to VGA and VGA
adapter
.

Okay, now that we covered that information, let's get down to business...
Since you already have your monitors and probably don't want to spend $200-300 on a docking station, this is the best and quickest solution:

You have two monitors both with VGA connectors. Your laptop has 1 DVI port on its side (correct?).
Look at the image of the DVI to VGA and VGA adapter. You need to purchase one of these. It will allow you to connect one end to the DVI port on the laptop and connect your monitors to the two VGA ports on the other end...viola!!

You can use the DVI to VGA and DVI adapter but it would complicate your situation unless you were trying to connect a VGA and DVI monitor so we can eliminate that option unless you are desparate and that's the only adapter you find to purchase.

These adapters are very inexpensive (probably anywhere from $9 to $19. You should be able to purchase them at a store that sells computers, hardware, software, etc. You may even find them at Wal-Mart or RadioShack. If need be, you can purchase one online. However, if you go out and search a couple of stores or computer places, you should find one and be able to connect your monitors when you get home.

Feel free to leave any comments if you need further information.

Thanks for using Fixya and don't forget to rate this solution.

Dvi port doesn't work with 23'' samsung monitor

yeah, you can set the display setting as extension display your DVI

Intel, ATI,Nvidia have tools also to set up,

i have ATI and use the ATI Catalyst tools and autodetect the monitors that i connected to my docking station, intel and nvidia also have this utility.

it depends on setting if u wanted the external monitor as CLONE monitor of your laptop or extension Monitor...

or they might have problem on DVI port of your docking station.

download and install the video utility ( must have .net installed before you install the utility)

the utility will detect your video ports (VGA,DVI,S-video)

let me know the update ..

Sony vaio r505jl docking station

I googled this and found that both the notebook itself and the docking station have ethernet connections, the docking station ethernet connection seems to be between the usb and monitor connection, The notebook itself has a ethernet connection on the right side of the notebook near the back under a rubber cover. Let me know if that was correct or not.
