Downloading the Firmware Step 1: Before downloading the firmware, make sure that your computer has an active Internet connection. If your computer is plugged directly into the router and cannot get online, disconnect your router and plug your computer directly into your cable or DSL modem. Step 2: Once you are able to get online, click here to go to the WRT54G Version 5 Download page. Step 3: Click Download to download the firmware file. Approx. file size (Zip file): 1.39 MB If you are using Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) and Internet Explorer, you may see a 'Pop-up blocked' message in your browser Information Bar. If so, click the bar and select Temporarily Allow Pop-ups. Then, click the Download link again. Step 4: Click Save in the File Download dialog box that appears. Step 5: In the Save As dialog box, choose a location for the file (like the Desktop) and click Save. The wrt54gv5_fw_1[1].00.6_US_code.zip file will then be downloaded. When the download is complete, click Close if prompted. Step 6: Double-click on the wrt54gv5_fw_1[1].00.6_US_code.zip file and extract its contents to a single folder (or to the Desktop). NOTE: You will need to use a utility to open and extract files from the ZIP file archive. Popular software to use is WinZip®. For information on how to download WinZip®, visit the following website: http://www.winzip.com. You can also use the built-in unzipping features of Windows XP to unzip the contents from the archive. The following (3) files should be available: * wrt54gv5_fw_1.00.6_US_code.bin * Readme.txt * wrt54gv5_ver.txt Upgrading the Router's Firmware Step 1: Plug your computer directly into Port 1 on the back of the router. Step 2: Make sure that the router's power is plugged in. Step 3: Open Internet Explorer. Type http://192.168.1.1 into the Address Bar and press [Enter]. Step 4: You will be prompted to enter a username and a password. Leave the username field blank, and enter admin for the password. Then, press [Enter] or click OK. NOTE: If you are asked for the password again, the router's default password was changed. Try a common password that you might have changed it to. If are still unable to log in, hold in the Reset button on the back of the router for 30 seconds. After 30 seconds, unplug the power to the router and then plug it back in. Then, try Steps 3 and 4 again. Step 5: When the router's web-based Setup page loads, click on the Administration tab. Step 6: On the Administration page, click on the Firmware Upgrade sub-tab. Step 7: On the Firmware Upgrade page, click Browse. Browse to the location where the firmware files were extracted, and select the wrt54gv5_fw_1.00.6_US_code file. When the file is selected, click Open. Step 8: Click the Upgrade button on the Firmware Upgrade page to start the upgrade. The upgrade will take a few minutes - please do not unplug the router's power cord or make any changes during this process. Step 9: When the upgrade has completed, the following message will appear: "Upgrade is successful. rebooting...." Completing the Firmware Upgrade Step 1: Close Internet Explorer. Step 2: Hold in the Reset button on the back of the router for 30 seconds. After 30 seconds, unplug the power to the router and then plug it back in. This step will ensure that the new firmware loads properly! When you are finished... The firmware upgrade is now complete! You can now use the router's Setup Wizard CD to configure your Internet service and set up your wireless connections.

Upgrading the router's firmware will give it numerous functions. This includes a more stable connection to the internet.
To upgrade the router's firmware, complete the following steps:
i. Downloading the Firmware
ii. Backing-Up the Router's Settings
iii. Upgrading the Router's Firmware
iv. Completing the Firmware Upgrade
v. Restoring the Router's Settings
vi. Completing the Firmware Upgrade Process
NOTE: Before proceeding with the upgrade, your computer must have an active Internet connection. It is also recommended that you use a wired computer in upgrading the router's firmware.
