Cannot find d drive on computer

Your DVD drive may fail to appear for several reasons not least of which are hardware failure and corrupt drivers. Windows XP era machines are rather old and tired now, but you do expect their hardware to work.

To troubleshoot DVD drive start with a bootable CD such as an old OS or software installation disk. Put the disk in the drive and reboot the machine. If necessary go into the BIOS or press the appropriate key on your machine to force boot from CD before hard drive.

If the DVD software comes up, it means that the disk drive is intact and working. Your problem is with XP configuration. Run your system repair software. Microsoft gives instructions here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/982116

However if it will not boot from DVD your drive or disk is broken or incorrectly configured. Time to repair or replace.

Ensure the disk and ROM compatibility.
check the CD/DVD in other drive and vice versa (another CD/DVD in PC CD/DVD ROM.
then ensure the booting sequence in BIOS setup. if every thing is ok and fine then the problem is with your CD/DVD ROM.

My dell optiplex gx520 sounds like it continues to startup for 20+ minutes. Windows load but I cannot do anything.

possibly your windows has become corrupted..try reinstalling it..if your dell came with pre-installed software, then you could use the OS reinstallation cd..note that you may loose all your data since reinstallation will include formating and deleting all your previous data

I have a dell gx520 running xp home . I want to dual boot ubuntu but the cd rom will not read from ubuntu disk. It readsxp and music cd's ok so it is not the rom at fault

Hello,
Make sure you set the BIOS to boot on the CD rom first. You can set it via the BIOS utility. Usually you press the F5 key and then go to boot options. And then place your CD ROM drive on the 1st boot priority.
Make sure also that your CD installer is working and not from a bad ISO download.
