How to Set Up a Netgear WGR614 V5 Wireless Router
Netgear routers--like all wireless routers--give you the opportunity to access the Internet with your laptop or wireless-adapted computer from virtually anywhere in your house within range of the router's WiFi signal. Though slightly different in appearance from other router models by Netgear, the WGR614 V5 acts similar in its setup process as others such as the WGT624 or WNR1000 series routers.

1 Prepare to install the Netgear router. Log off and shut down your computer system. Turn your Internet modem off and/or disconnect its power supply from the electrical outlet. Take out the contents of the Netgear router box and verify that all the essentials are present: the resource CD, the yellow wire and the router itself.
2 Connect the Internet modem to the Netgear WGR614 v5 router. Locate the yellow Ethernet wire running from one end of the Internet modem to the computer's Ethernet port. Unhook the computer-end of the Ethernet wire and insert this end into the port on the router labeled "Internet." After inserting, confirm that the wire runs from the modem to the router.
3 Connect the Netgear router to the computer. Grab the blue cable supplied with the router. Securely insert one end of the blue cable into one of the four "LAN" ports on the router (the "LAN" ports are labeled with numbers from 1 to 4). Insert the other end of the blue wire into your computer's Ethernet port.
4 Start your network devices. Turn on or connect your Internet modem to an electrical outlet. Wait for at least two minutes to allow the modem to fully boot. Plug the Netgear router into the wall or electrical outlet as well, and wait one to two minutes. Turn on your computer.
5 Look at the Netgear router to verify that all lights are on. The "power," "Internet" and "wireless" icon symbols on the front of the router should be solidly lit. One of the four "LAN" ports should also be lit with either a green or amber color.
6 Insert the resource CD that came with your Netgear router to launch the "welcome" screen. Select "Router Setup" from the menu to begin the "Smart Wizard" setup application. Read and follow the setup steps, including naming your SSID (secure set identifier) or "network name" and setting a level of wireless security. Finish the setup process, ending with the registration of your Netgear router.
7 Verify that your Netgear router has been set up correctly. Open an Internet browser from both the computer that is connected to the router and on a computer that has a wireless card or adapter. Surf to your favorite Internet sites to verify your connection is working. Open your "network connections" utility on your operating system and make sure it shows that you're connected to your own wireless network.

1. Choose a convenient location to begin installing your router, such as an open floor space or table. This does not need to be the permanent location of the router. For wireless routers, it may be necessary to re-position the unit after installing it as the signals may not reach all areas needed.
2. Unplug the power to your Internet modem.
3. Power down your computer(s).
4. Plug the power in to your router.
5. Connect your Internet modem to the router. The cable plugs into the router jack named "WAN" or "Internet". Turn on your Modem.
6. Connect one computer to the router. Even if the router is a wireless model, connect this first computer to the router via a network cable.
   
   
   
7. Turn on the computer.
8. From the computer connected to the router, open your web browser. Enter the router's address, http://192.168.2.1, and press Enter on your keyboard.
9. Click Login in the upper right-hand corner of the page. The router does not ship with a password, so just click Submit.
   
10. To configure the router to connect to the Internet, you must enter information provided by your Internet Service Provider (ISP) into the "Connection Type" section in the left-hand column under the "Internet WAN" heading of the router's configuration page. If using DSL Internet, you may need to enter the PPPoE username and password. Likewise, if you have been issued a static IP address by your provider, the static IP fields (including network mask and gateway) must also must be set in the router.
    
11. If this is a wireless router, change the network name (referred to as SSID). While the router comes to you with a network name set at the factory, you may want to use something more familiar for your network. Read Changing the router's wireless channel and SSID for a description of this process.
    
12. Plug the power back into your Internet modem.
13. Verify that this computer can connect to the Internet properly. Open a new web browser and visit a few Internet sites such as Google.com or Yahoo.com.
14. Finally, configure additional network security features as desired to guard your systems against Internet attackers.

1. There may be 3 issues here to consider 1st :
a. the network card \
b. the Ethernet cable
c. the Ethernet port on the router defective.

7. use a straight through Ethernet cord ( a know good one )\
8. verify that the network card is working by using a loop back ( that is ping the NIC card ( done by using dos command prompt>> loopback address is 127.0.0.1 this should yield 4 hops complete if the NIC card is working ( NIC = Network Interface Card)

Likely a DNS problem.

1. Check to see if your router is set to obtain DNs as dynamic or static (probably dynamic). Verify the listed primary & secondary DNS servers are correct for your ISP.
2. Check router to see if it acts as DHCP server for your network to assign ip numbers to clients. If so, then verify your computer as dynamic, otherwise set static ip in the same subnet.
3. Verify gateway assignments.

STEP 1: Before You Begin In order to set up your Linksys Router, be sure to first have the following: 1. A Linksys Router. 2. A DSL modem. 3. A working computer that can be wired in directly to the router for initial configuration and testing. 4. Two (2) standard Ethernet network cables. Linksys Routers come with one (1) standard network cable that you can use. 5. The PPPoE DSL username and password assigned by your Internet Service Provider. Depending on the provider, your username format might be similar to username, vzn123456, or an e-mail address ([email protected]). If you are not sure what your username and password are, contact your Internet Service Provider for more information. STEP 2: Check Your Internet Connection Before installing your Linksys Router, it is important to first verify that you can successfully access the Internet by connecting directly to your modem (without your Linksys Router installed). 1. If you are connecting for the first time, follow the instructions provided by your provider to set up your modem and computer for online access. 2. Verify that you are able to access the Internet without any problems. If you are not able to get a connection, contact your Internet Service Provider for assistance. When you are able to access the Internet using your modem, continue to Step 3 and proceed with the installation of your Linksys Router. STEP 3: Connect the Hardware Follow these steps to connect your Linksys Router to your modem and computer. 1. Shut down your computer and unplug the power cords connected to your modem and Linksys Router if they are currently powered on. 2. Disconnect the network cable that connects to the back of your computer. 3. Connect the network cable that you just removed to the Internet port (or WAN port) located on the back of your Linksys Router. Your modem should now be connected to your Linksys Router. 4. Connect a second network cable back into your computer (into the same port that was disconnected in #2). 5. Connect the other end of the second network cable to one of the numbered ports located on the back of your Linksys Router (labeled 1, 2, 3, 4, etc.).
