Some more intense cleaning might do it. Dust isn't very friendly to stereos, and it doesn't stay only on the surface. So, go get your favourite screwdriver, unplug it from the AC, open the covers and start cleaning, vacum, gentle brush, whatever it takes to get the dust out while not moving or misplacing any of the components. About the cd specifically - more often then not when i had cd problems it was solved by cleaning dust of the lense. locate the laser lense and check to see if theres any dust accumulated on it. If there is, very gently brush it off, if not check for anything else around there that looks out of place before closing the cover and trying to play a cd. make sure you try more then 1 cd, or more then 1 cd format. Don't try only burnt media. You didnt mention much about the symptoms, but here's a link to a good guide on diagnosing shelf systems - http://www.fixya.com/ThreadView.aspx?thid=101552&prdid=222740 good luck

SOURCE: cd's skipping

Try first to clean the lens with a lens cleaner disc. or cleaning the lens manually. if that does not help, then im afraid the unit has come to the end of its usefull life. and is time to get a new one . Good Luck

My emerson hd8197 compact disc player won't stop skipping

Hello Keira

Buy a CD Lens Cleaning Disc from Walmart. Run that a couple of times. If that doesn't fix it send it back.

Oh, it a portable Sony Disc Player clone. That means it has to be 15 years old or more. Actually, I found the date '18/6/2007'. It's a new 14 year old device that has been in storage. Emerson are a bargain basement brand and generally lack quality..

CD player not working

Chances are there is some dust on the lens of the player. You might need to go inside and clean it off with some Servisol Video 40 or other suitable lens cleaning stuff. The dust might have got disturbed when you put it into storage.

CDs not playing or skipping

Get a lens cleaning CD. It has a brush on it. You put it in like any CD and let it brush off any dust accumulation on the laser diode inside.

Cd's are skipping. cleaned discs and still skipping. tried cd's in different player and they work fine.

3M makes a CD lens cleaner that is a playable CD with micro brushes sticking out of the surface of the CD.
You can find them at office supply stores, K-mart, etc. I don't remember where I bought mine, but it works great for a CD-recorder that I use in a high dust environment.

Here's a link
to one that I just found by googling "3m cd lens cleaner"

I've never dealt with that vendor before, but it has a picture of the product so you can see what I'm talking about.

If this helps, please be sure to hit the "thumbs-up" for me!

Dvd player can't find cd/dvd

this problem on most cases can be solved by unplugging and then replugging the data chords of your cd drive for this you have to unscrew one side of the cabinet of your cpu and then you can see the power cable from the smps and the data chord from the motherboard you must unplug it and clean ay dust present and replug it

Skipping yamaha 765

I have a very similar type unit, a Nakamichi CDC-3 that had the same problem. I found this link....

http://repairfaq.ece.drexel.edu/REPAIR/F_cdfaq6.html#CDFAQ_001

I spent about two hours fixing mine. The sled mechanism was binding somehow, causing random skipping. The first 10 minutes was getting it apart and figuring what was wrong, the remainder was spent getting all those tiny parts back in the proper place.

Look up the exact symptom before going at it (probably long skips). Set aside a long slow lazy day with nothing to do. DO NOT drink too much coffee, you will be handling tiny parts that go in tedious locations, so you don't need caffeine jitters adding to your misery. Take your time and be careful. It's well worth it. Mine plays like a new one.

Denon AVR-X2400H Intermittent Protection Mode on startup Apologies for the incoming wall of text. Whenever my Denon AVR-X2400H receiver has been off for several hours most regularly in the morning, it will often go into protection mode on start. This has been happening for months. After anywhere from a minute to 20 minutes, after many restarts/moving the unit around/swearing, it will start normally and function without issue for hours until the next long period of being off. It is the dreaded PRT: DC. During this period of protection mode, it will fail to start even if I disconnect everything but power. I have swapped the power cables, tried different outlets, and let it get plenty of airflow though if it were temp related it would be a different code / not happen on first startup. I even opened up the unit, disassembled it and looked for moisture/scorch marks/loose cables before re-assembling. I have performed a couple factory resets over the last couple months. I assume the intermittent startup nature hints at a failing but not failed part, but am not sure what to replace. I have access to an engineer friend / multimeter if helpful. It is well out of warranty, but there's a part of me that wants to believe it can be salvaged, especially given current AVR prices. Other things I have tried include leaving it in ECO/network standby. There was a period where spinning the source wheel on startup would cause the AVR to lock up but not trigger protection, after which unplugging/replugging would allow it to start normally. Not exactly scientific.
