Hitachi big screen model CU5003D purchased 9/1991

This has been an excellent TV , no problems for 17 years , the picture is still great , however the TV will not turn on. It only clicks when the on/off switch is pressed. I assume it has something to do with the power on / off switch.

Do this problem sound familiar and should I have it fixed , what would the approximate repair cost be. I only ask since it was still working great.

I have a Hitachi SP43H purchased in 2000. This TV has been trouble free until a few weeks ago, the unit will shut off and the red power light will blink and make a pulsing sound. If you turn it off, the lights and sound stop. After several minutes, you can turn it on and it may play for several more hours before shuting off again. Some days it may only shut off once, other days numerous times. PLEASE HELP, I have a 18 month old boy that is not happy!!!!

Most likely the power supply has failed or has detected a fault in another circuit. (The CRT-type rear projection TVs were prone to convergence amplifier failure, which could blow internal fuses; you may have a bad convergence amp that doesn't quite blow its fuse but still overloads the power supply. Usually they go out completely; the TV still runs, but one or more colors in the picture distort into a bow-tie shape.)

The TV was obsolete 15 years ago, so it would probably be impossible to get a replacement modules. A technician may be able to repair the TV by tracking down and replacing the bad component, but you would likely pay well over $100 in bench charges.

You can get a 50" LCD TV that uses less power and takes up much less space for $300-$600, has nearly twice as sharp a picture, and works with modern digital TV inputs.

SOURCE: to fix or not?? 1990 Hitachi big screen

Sorry the answer is no. If the rolling pic was the only problem you had then yes throw a new signal board in and move on. In this case your picture not being as sharp as it used to be will also be tubes going bad..18 years not a bad run on three tubes that run extremely warm. Have fun on your upgrade to lcd or dlp proojection this will cost less than the fix of your tv.

Age of tv?

I purchased mine from Circuit city back in spring of 2002 as a display model that they were no longer selling. So I would assume 2001 which would be almost 8 years old. Excellent tv!
