Re: pal capture format
News, read the following recently:
"This is an OK message. This means the video you are capturing is not 720x480, and will be scaled up to 720x480. Video from a camcorder or VCR is not 720x480 and will be adjusted to that resolution. this has nothing to do with your Pal settings."

Re: pal capture format
Out of page 26 in the manual: "When you select "preferences" from the list the following window appears on the screen. it offers some general settings for working with ProPix EVE.
the check boxes under video standard enable you to specify whether the project is edited in PAL or NTSC."
also from the manual page 30 - go to the drop down menu video device, clicking the button on the right gets you into the video input settings dialog box where you can configure the capture device.
under the "video standard" pull down menu you can choose PAL.
hope this helps, and check back soon because the manual should soon be online on this site.
Good luck!

Hi lloyd_kin466 I'm not familiar with Pinnacle stuff but in any capture software , you need to customize the capture options . Set the system to PAL or to NTSC , select the entry . If you are reading from a VHS device , select " composite " and not TV ... etc ... It should work unless your software hasn't been correctly installed or is not compatible with your OS . Best regards , fanaudi .
You are either running NTSC into a Pal system or the other way around. Check the setup menu on the Virginmedia box to make sure what it's running, then make sure the TV card is running in the same format.
Usually, this indicates that video source is PAL but the capture is set to NTSC, or that the video source is NTSC but the source is PAL.
Make sure that the video capture device is set to match the signal of the input.
PAL is used in Europe, NTSC in North America.
How you set it depends on the Video Capture software you use, but look for PAL/NTSC setting and switch it.
It complete depends what you are recording in! PAL or NTSC? and how many frames... FCP is customized to your camera settings, match them up and then capture away!
I capture mine using a PC because then you can play around with both MAC and PC editing platforms as MAC captures are encrypted to only run on MAC.
No, you have to capture a signal in format it is generated, save the recording and then do 'transcoding' into different format. Search web for free transcoding utilities.
Sounds like you're feeding the ADVC the wrong broadcast format. Either PAL when the ADVC is in NTSC mode, or NTSC when the ADVC is in PAL mode.
Alternatively, your capture software may have a broadcast format setting as well, and that may not be matching what the ADVC is sending out. Remember that the ADVC does not do NTSC<->PAL format conversion, so NTSC analog input becomes NTSC DV, and PAL analog input becomes PAL DV.
There may be an input selection between Composite and S-Video that needs to be toggled in your Hauppauge software.
Your Hauppauge card may also be in the wrong signal format mode (NTSC or PAL). Your source device and your Hauppauge card need to be in the same mode (both NTSC or both PAL) for the capture to work properly.
If your NV-VP33 is a SCART output, then you may need to check your SCART adapter and your device as not all devices output both S-Video (Y/C - two signals) and Composite (CVBS - one signal) type signals.
If your SCART adapter has both Composite and S-Video outputs, try the other one.
And finally... if you're playing an NTSC tape/DVD in a PAL player, it doesn't mean the output is true NTSC 3.58. Most times it's NTSC 4.43 which is OK for TVs, but NOT okay for video capture devices. Video capture devices need true NTSC 3.58 to sync the color carrier properly.
It's difficult to tell what's really going on by looking at the PC monitor. You should generate a DV file and play it back through the ADVC to a TV and see.
The issue is interlacing. Since the two fields of interlaced video are originated at different points in time, when you play both fields on a non-interlaced display like a PC monitor, you see the two combined and they don't match up. So you get half of a ball before the line, and half of the ball after the line and it looks funny.
Change the DIP switch to PAL, unplug the unit (no power), then plug it back in. You need to power-cycle the unit to after changing DIP switch settings.
Also make sure that your capture application is set to PAL mode, if there is a NTSC/PAL setting.
