MP3 players use the popular USB connection which sometimes produces errors while connecting. These messages are similar to the "Device Not Recognized" error received with various USB devices. Fixing an MP3 player is sometimes specific to the brand, but they are so similar that most can be fixed the same troubleshooting steps.



Instructions

Device Manager

Click "Start" and go to "Control Panel." Double-click "System" and locate the Hardware tab to find the Device Manager. Vista and Windows 7 users can just type "Device Manager' from the start menu.

Locate "Disk Drives" from the list and double-click "Portable Device." If there is an exclamation mark or other error on the device, go to the "Drivers" tab.

Click "Uninstall" and remove the player. Restart the computer and attach the player reinstall the drivers.

Anti-virus conflicts

Plug the player into a different computer to see if it gets recognized. If it does not, contact the manufacturer to find out if it is broken.

Turn off your anti-virus program on your PC if the device works on other computers. Reinstall the drivers using the device manager as described in section 1.

Plug in the player to confirm the connection.

Other solutions

Check the battery level and make sure the batter is not low or depleted. A low battery will sometimes prevent the player from connecting. Let it charge from the power cord, if necessary.

Verify that you have at least Service Pack 1 installed. Go to the Start menu and type "Run." Press Enter.

Type "Winver" in the box and press "Enter." The Windows version will be displayed along with any installed service packs. Download a service pack from Microsoft, if applicable.

Remove the player from the USB port and push a pin into the reset hole located on the bottom. Reconnect to see if the problem is resolved.

Check the connection to make sure it's secure. The cable should fit firmly into both the player and the computer. Connect to a different USB port if you have one available.

Download updated firmware or use the MP3 Recovery Tool provided under Resources (mp3 players).

Tips & Warnings

A bad cable will sometimes prevent a good connection. Use a different one to isolate the cause.

GE is an app. It is regularly updated. Be sure it is up to date. When your GPS is plugged into a USB port via a standard USB cable it will enter the MASS STORAGE MODE. If GE is installed properly, it will auto recognize the unit and open. Do not use a Garmin cable to plug it in. It will not enter the mass storage mode with that cable.

In this case, disconnect the USB device then reset this unit and the USB device. • Do not leave a USB device in the car, expose to direct sunlight, or high temperature to avoid deformation or cause damages to the device. • This unit may not play back files in a USB device properly when using a USB extension cord. • USB devices equipped with special functions such as data security functions cannot be used with the unit. • When connecting a USB cable, use the USB 2.0 cable. • Do not use a USB device with 2 or more partitions. • Depending on the shape of the USB devices and connection ports, some USB devices may not be attached properly or the connection might be loose. • This unit cannot recognize a USB device whose rating is other than 5 V and exceeds 500 mA. • Do not pull out and attach the USB device repeatedly while "READING" is shown on the display. • This unit may not recognize a memory card inserted into the USB card reader. • Connect only one USB device to the unit at a time. Do not use a USB hub. • Operation and power supply may not work as intended for some USB devices. • The maximum number of characters for: - Folder names : 63 characters - File names : 63 characters - MP3 Tag : 60 characters - WMA Tag : 60 characters • This unit can recognize a total of 65 025 files, 255 folders (255 files per folder including folder without unsupported files), and of 8 hierarchies.

Computer does not recognize it
assuming your using a windows xp or 2000 os, try another cable if you have one..turn the gps off, plug in the usb cord and restart the gps. if that fails, if the cable is connected to a port on the front of the computer,move the usb cable to a rear port on the computer and try the previous way i just explained.

if those fail, disconnect all usb devises connected to the pc and restart the computer and try again. (always use a rear port on the pc if you can)

MWZ-S615F will not charge or connect
I'm sure it's the cable that's not functioning properly. Mine started doing the same thing and after wiggling and adjusting the cable inside the MP3 itself, the computer finally recognized it and I was free to charge and add music. Also you can try to connect it to a different USB port on your computer. The beeps however are news to me, unless I just never noticed. One piece of advice is to never let the MP3 battery die, because after I let it happen mine began to experience more severe problems.

Export via USB to hard drive
The USB ports on this unit are non-functional unless you hack it. There are several methods of doing so, but the easiest is probably to purchase an upgrade kit from dvrupgrade.com. You can either purchase a replacement hard drive, or software to do it yourself.

After you do this, the USB ports can be used to connect a network device, and you can use different software programs to export and import programming. You will also have other features you normally wouldn't have on the stock unit. Good resources on this topic are tivocommunity.com and dealdatabase.com.
