Hello, the HP4MV is quite an older printer. it is possible, that if the printer has never been professional cleaned, that dust will accumulate inside the printer and settle on the power supply and cause overheating and the burning smell. The proper method for cleaning laser printers is to remove all of the covers and use an ESD (Electrostatic Shielded Device) rated vacuum to remove all of the accumulated toner and debris. the use of compreesed air is NOT recommended. I would advise to have the printer cleaned and it should good for many years to come.
Do not understand the problem. The front panel is held in with a hook on each side but both these hooks are ON (part of) the fuser unit. So if you have the fuser unit out the front panel should not stay up at all. Can you please describe in more detail?
You could remove the fuser, turn the machine off, and wait an hour. It may reset the error. However, if the error still persists, it will be a parts replacement of the fuser, low voltage power supply, or the DC controller. 90% it is the fuser. Good luck.
