I have a Presario 1200z notebook that powers on, fan runs but thats it. It never boots up, there is no display, internal or external. Also tried 2 different power supply sources in addition to just battey power. Removed all devices but it still displays nothing.
It seems all Compaq laptops are infected by this problem. If you are sure that the AC port and the AC adapter is working? Can you hear the laptop trying to boot? ..e.g. Hard Drive spinning up, Floppy Disk Drive noise, etc.. if so ...Try hooking up a external monitor.. Does it smell like anything has burnt? (Call for service) Is there anything that sounds loose when you shake it? (Call for service or you can to open it?) Try booting your laptop from a bootable floppy if you have one. Or use Compaq's Recovery CD. But I doubt if you use recovery CD, you might lose data on your HDD. Which O.S. are you using? The Boot-up mechanism checks all the hardware before starting Windows. Some times floppy drive doesn't allow the laptop to boot further by either not responding or sending wrong signal.
