There are a couple options.

  • Check in BIOS to see if your motherboard supports IDE emulation mode. If it does turn it on and XP will install just fine.
  • Download and read about using nlite to incorporate sata drivers into an Windows XP installation disc. (You will need another working computer. Download nlite and insert the XP disc run nlite and select your CD as your windows install file location. Download generic sata drivers, intel has a bunch you can get for free. In the nlite menu to add drivers select folder option and select the folder with the drivers. Set anything else you want in nlite and burn the new XP disc. This disc will install just fine as it now has sata drivers.
Comment if you need further instruction.

Insert the Windows Install media in your computer and make sure Boot to CD/DVD is set as first boot device within the BIOS. If you need more help, reply with which Windows version and is this on a IDE or SATA HDD

Sata drivers pt80c-alx boot

SATA HARD DRIVE - XP INSTALLATION
The problem is that XP installation CD does not have a SATA driver, unless you have a SATA drive on a disk etc. and can install the driver when XP asks for a hard drive driver then, XP cannot detect the hard disk and therefore won't install XP. The FIX. Go into the BIOS and disable the SATA drive (enable IDE emulation), this will make XP think it is a IDE/PATA hard disk. Then you can install XP normally. When Windows has been installed then install all the device drivers (including the SATA driver), then shut down and boot up and got into the BIOS and enable the SATA drive.

Problems with windows.

  1. Are you using a SATA drive or an IDE(PATA)?
  2. If using SATA, is SATA set up in bios as first boot or second after CDROM?
  3. If using PATA hard drive is the IDE channel working properly? Switch the CDROM and Hard drive ribbon cables on the motherboard.
