Re: Powershot S1 Digital Camera: Flash won't fire
Make sure the camera is not in Document mode . Document takes a picture with added contrast so text stands out.
Make sure the camera is not set to Infinity focus . When you select Infinity Focus, the camera automatically turns off the flash and auto focus so you get sharp, clear pictures.
Make sure the camera is set to Fill, Auto, or Red Eye flash. See your camera manual for details about setting the flash.

This also happened to my camera and I am able to pop the flash up manually by flicking it up with the edge of my fingernail. It helps to simultaneously press down on the piece just above the microphone (I think) which is just above the viewfinder. That gives a little leverage.
This is a common problem with S1 IS and it is caused by faulty CCD sensor. Note that you can playback captured images without any problem but in capture mode all you get is blank screen.
Will have to go to Canon but note that Canon repairs these models free of charge when it is the CCD sensor that stops working.
Mine does the exact same thing but I just pop it open manually when I need it. The great thing is that unless you have a very dark night shot you can pretty much shoot with out it, but don't be afraid to pop it out manually. It will close again!
