I have been using my HDDR320E03X 320 GB USB hard disk for almost 6 months without any problems. When I connected it today on my XP system, i could not access the data on the hard disk. XP recognises it as a mass storage USB device and also shows the drive letter in explorer. But when i select the drive, it asks me to format it. I do not want to loose data on it. So have not tried to format. What could be the possible reason for this ? Are there any utilities which can check the health of the drive ? Need help

Have you tried to uninstall it from your device manager? When you do that, scan for hardware changes, it might pick it up. Also, try moving it to a different usb port after you uninstall from device manager.
Unfortunately, external hard drives go bad. A 320 is probably a few years old, I replace mine about every 3 years to be sure. I know it sounds funny, but things work till they don't. Just because it was working yesterday does not mean it will work today. It is possible there is a setting in your XP or 7 to keep from seeing the drive, but doubtful it changed on both systems between yesterday and today.
connect the USB external hard disk to usb port by the way disconnect other working harddisks
available on the system, boot the system with bootable cd/floppy go to command prompt and run
chkdsk on this drive
Also download "mbrfix" connect all working harddisks along with the nondetecting harddisk and run mbrfix for the USB defective harddisk
Try using different USB data transfer cable, if power source adapter is used check for rated power output in multimeter for this adapter, if found defective replace it with new/good adapter with same
specifications
Bad luck if harddisk controller has failed you have to go in for new harddisk
It is very possible that your BIOS will not support a large hard drive. Without more information on your system it will be hard to diagnose your problem.
