Cassette loading process won't complete

When I insert the cassette, the carriage retracts backward into drop position but then fails to drop and the cassette door never closes. There are no discernable clicking sounds or other unusual noises. The VCR then spits the tape back out.

This is a problem with the process called 'tape loading' - pulling the tape loop out of the cassette and wrapping it around the spinning video drum, engaging the capstan and pinch roller and reel rotation. If you're NOT still under warrantee you should at least open the VCR and Check all the belts above and below the deck. Belts can appear to be firm but if they do not return immediately to their relaxed length when you stretch them 25%, they will need to be replaced. With the cover off, observe the behavior when you hit play. (You may need to put a piece of cardboard over the cassette to block external light from interfering with the start/end tape sensors). Assuming this is a basic VCR (no instant start features), you should see: 1. The video head drum begins to spin. 2. the roller guides move smoothly on the tracks, wind the tape around the drum, and stop snuggly pressed against the 'V-stopper' at the end of the tracks. 3. The pinch roller moves into position and presses the tape against the capstan. 4. The tape begins to move and is wound up by the takeup reel. 5. The picture and sound appear on the TV. With a 'rapid or quick start' (or it may be called something else) transport, the tape moves to a half-loaded position when the cassette is inserted. This is at an intermediate position partially pulled out of the cassette but not wrapped around the drum. On VCRs with a real-time counter and/or index search capabilities, the tape will be in contact with the control head. With an 'instant start' transport, the tape will fully load around the spinning drum when the cassette is inserted but the capstan will not engage and no tension will be applied to the tape until you press PLAY or REC. (After about 5 minutes, the drum will stop and it may unload to the half loaded or unloaded position.) Note that for VCRs with a real-time counter and/or index search capabilities, the tape must be in contact with the control head (but not the video heads) for all relevant modes. These VCRs (which include many modern units) must therefore pull the tape at least partly out of the cassette. In all cases, the completion of the sequence results in approximately the same mechanical configuration during PLAY.

When inserting vhs tape, the player pulls the tape from inserted vhs

That is exactly what a typical M-Load mechanism is supposed to do. Once the VHS tape cassette is inserted, cassette housing cover will be flipped up and two arms will pull tape out of cassette housing to wrap tape around cylindrical spinning head housing that contains video heads and, if VHS HI-FI, audio heads as well. When stop or eject button is pressed, arms will retract and tape will wind back into cassette housing. What type of problem are you experiencing with unit? It may have nothing to do with M-load engaging tape around head cylinder.

Reset vo-9850

This is usually caused by frayed wires in the cassette carriage. There is a bundle of colored wires that take the sensor outputs to the harness from the carriage. After many loads, they eventually break and need replacing. They are brown, red, orange and yellow from memory in a bundle of four, about 2 inches long and are soldered at each end to small circuit boards at the back right hand side of the cassette carriage (assuming you are standing at the front of the machine).
Otherwise you could have a dusty or faulty opto-coupler in the carriage. Another problem is when the cassette slips back when loading starts. Try keeping a finger on the back of the cassette as it loads into the machine to keep it engaged. Don't jam your finger, as soon as the tape goes forward enough and then begins to drop down, get the hell out of there!

How do i set a new daisy wheel for the ML 100

1. Open the top cover.
2. Pull the lever towards you to release the daisy wheel lock.
3. Remove the cassette daisy wheel by pulling it out of the machine by the protruding "ear' on the top right.
4. Insert the desired cassette daisy wheel into the slot and press down gently.
5. Slide the lever back to its' original position to lock the cassette daisy wheel in place. Make sure to press the lever firmly.
6. Close the top cover.
7. Press [CODE]+[RESET] to move the carrier to the previous position.
(make sure the daisy wheel cassette is not inserted backwards. The "ear" should always be on the upper right.
improper insertion of the daisy wheel may cause malfunction and incorrect printing.
It is not necessary to remove the cassette ribbon when replacing the daisy wheel.
Please check the shape of your daisy wheel cassette before replacing the daisy wheel. The daisy wheel cassette type "B" cannot be used with this machine.)

Vhs tape won't load completely

I assume the cassette flap lifts fully, allowing the tape to go into the deck as this is a small lever mechanism. When the tape goes so far in, it activates a switch to start the loading motor this is usually a metal or plastic pin on the deck depending on the make of VCR (as you do not mention the model of your VCR, I can only give you an overall explination of a carriage mechanism). The pins at the side can incorporate a start sequence as well & will guide the deck into position. It looks like your machine has gone out of alignment & to solve the problem you would need to remove the cassette housing & re-align the pin at the side so that it follows the correct path, this can sometimes be a tricky & awkward thing to do as you can break parts of the deck if it is not aligned correctly. My advice would be to take it to a service repair centre.

8mm Cassette mechanism fails to eject or sometimes fails to close

This camcorder is at least six years old now, and replacements are available quite cheaply vie on-line auction sites, probably at far less than the cost of repair.

Loading tapes

I had a similar issue where the tape bay would not lock in and engage the motor mechanism to load the tape. I removed the battery from the unit and let it stand for approximately a minute then reinserted the battery. The tape drawer closed first without a tape then reopened with no issue. I then inserted a new tape with no issue. I guess it needed a hard reboot.

Can't insert tape into deck

Remove the cover again and move the tape carriage all the way towards the front (the carriage is not fully in the locked position). Once that is done you should be able to load a cassette again.

Stuck tape

If you haven't already done so, don't get overly forceful to avoid bending or breaking something. Often the cassette carriage mechanism is gear driven, and by moving the gear one direction or the other will unload the tape. You may need to disassemble the machine further to gain access to the drive mechanisim. Sometimes the carriage mech. can be entirely removed from the VCR by removing the attachment screws. Other times, these screws are made inaccessible by the tape itself. Look down on the right side of the carriage. If you do remove the carriage, mark the gear positioning first! as the gears must be positioned back exactly as they were from the manufacturer. You might need to employ the services of a technician if things are complicated.
