Erratic mouse behavior or my mouse has a mind of it's own

KEIO optical mouse m/n p816 driver version:5.1.2600.0 Microsoft 2001 system: AMD 2000xp+ 1gig ram 130 gig hd WindowsXP home SP2 recently updated dvd burner cdrw Nvidia gforce 5200 video card My Mouse suddenly started behaving erractically. Sometimes it just wonders around the screen at random in an erratic zigzag fashion other times it will zip across the screen in any direction. If I lift the mouse off of the desk to reposition it the pointer almost always shoots to the bottom right corner of the screen. It is also a wheel mouse and in some webpages when I am scrolling down the page when I stop to read something suddenly it scrolls very fast towards the bottom of the screen. I primarily play Everquest on this machine and the mouse does the same things when playing the game. I have removed and reinstalled the mouse driver several times to no avail. I have changed to an older ball mouse, to a different optical mouse and tried several other ideas that folks on other forums have posted about. This is the second time I have had this trouble. I don't remember what fixed it before, but I thought it was simply reloading the mouse driver. I havn't tried wiping the harddrive and totally reloading everything yet But I might.. someone posted in another forum that they did and it fixed things for a short time. I have ran two or three spyware programs as well as a couple virus probrams. (detection programs that is) My system seems to be clean from those annoyances. Any ideas? Thanks, Core

I had a similar problem with an optical mouse that moved on its own accord, usually upwards and to the left when left stationary. When moving by hand, it was also erratic the pointer not following hand movement.

I changed the mouse pad and now use a course brown paper similar to newsprint and the problem has ceased. Amazing.

GO TO REGISTRY EDIT, FIND HKEY_CONTROLPANEL\MOUSE.

DELETE THE KEYS THEN RESTART WINDOWS.
WINDOWS WILL REBUILD THE KEYS.
IT MAY BE THAT YOUR REG KEY IS CORRUPTED.

If the mouse is optical, check the surface you're using it on. There may be some reflective property causing the trouble. If you have a laptop with a touch-pad, the outer area of the touch-pad may be causing the problem. Check for the build up of debris around the touch-pad border (under the plastics).

Try a new mousepad. the lazer reads even the fibers of mouse pads. even if it feels clean, it might be picking up on that.
