"...try resoldering the coil that connects the base of the horizontal output transistor to the horizontal driver transistor." This was the advice given me for my RCA. I have the exact problem that you have. I'm a novice, so I really don't know what to look for.

Sounds to me like the screen is bad on it. The screen should at least light up and if its not then the screen is bad. Cost of replacing the screen is more then the unit. If you system is under warranty go that route otherwise get another DS.
