I get a flashing lock symbol on my keyboard apon turning my laptop on? The lock has a number 9 in it. The laptop won't boot up?
Please help

this is old, but in case someone stumbles onto this through google, this is usually a motherboard problem. i have seen this many times (especially in dells). if you press power and the num lock blinks a few times and stops and the pc doesnt boot, then the motherboard is usually bad.

HERE is the REAL answer to this question!!

First, Download this document:
ftp://ftp.dell.com/Manuals/all-products/esuprt_laptop/esuprt_vostro_notebook/vostro-1510_service%20manual_en-us.pdf

Then go to page 52 (Diagnostic Light Codes During POST). It describes in detail all of the possible combinations of lights and their associated failures.

This solution holds true for other models of Vostro as well.

Some of the solutions I found for this are nuts!! It's obvious they will let ANYONE post on here, even if they have no clue what they are talking about!!

Just push "num lock" button :).  This flashing Lock symbol [9] means "Num Lock" is on - numeric keyboard enabled. If you wish turn it on or off just press the <Num lock> key, sometimes you have to use the <FN>+<Num Lock> keys.

Try removing your battery and then putting it back. If that doesn't work, then either your hard drive is bad or maybe even your motherboard is bad. If you can get into your computer's BIOS, check and see if it will allow you to do a system restore from the BIOS page. As stated above, it is probably that your hard drive is bad.

Possible memory issue. Try Reseating your memory card on the system, it would be helpful.

What do the lighted icons stand for at the top of the keyboard? One looks like a locked padlock with a 9 in it. What does it mean?

That is your number lock key is turned on, which means that your 9 key keypad is ready to use. If you press the number lock key on your keyboard the light will go away but your 9 key numeric keyboard won't work until you press the number lock key again.

The function key is always on, on the keyboard. How do I change it back to a normal keyboard?

Press the NumLk/ScrLk button at the top right corner. That will turn off the 9-key number and symbol buttons. The Function key dosn't get stuck, just the number lock key.

There is a lock 9 symbol above my f4 button on my latitude e4300 laptop and i would like to know what this means?

The lock 9 is for num lock.

Usually there is a 'Fn' button on the keyboard of a laptop. It has to be somewhere near the 'ctrl' 'windows' or 'alt' button on the left.

If you press and hold the 'Fn' key and then the numlock 9, you will toggle numlock on and off.

The 'Fn' of the key is normally written in another color. There are several buttons on the keyboard thet has a same color number or sign. To enable this signs and numbers, you have to press and hold the 'Fn' key and then the key with the desired number or sign.

Dell inspiron 2200 laptop - what are the 4 lights on top right of keyboard for? the first one is constantly blinking and the others are never lit up

Hi those are your keyboard and status lights

Looking at your laptop from the front the first light on your Right hand side is your scroll lock light and is only on when you press the scroll lock button (the symbol shows a lock with a little down arrow)

The light to the left hand side of that light is your caps lock light and again only turns on when you press the caps lock key (The symbol shows a lock with a A in it)

The light to the left hand side of that is your numeric keypad light (Symbol has a lock with a 9 in it), this comes on when you press the num lock key on your keybaord

Finally the last key is your hard drive light (like a cylinder), this will be flashing most of the time as you use your PC as it is constantly reading and writing data

On boot up a lock symbol with a '9' is lit & nothing else happens

the "9" inside a lock means that your Num Lock button has been pressed. If all you see is the ">" then maybe you are looking at what's called a DOS prompt, and I have no idea why that would display. Try holding the Power Switch for 10 seconds and restart your computer. Hopefully things will be better, and you know where your Num Lock key is.

After being turned on the screen goes black and the lock key with the number 9 is illuminated ablove the keyboard

I had that happen to me with my Dell as well... If you're comfortable with taking a laptop apart.. you'll need to detach the screen ribbon, clean it with rubbing alcohol, and then reattach it. This should do the trick..

I have dell inspiron 6000 laptop. The laptop keyboard got locked. I can't use the keyboard and if press any key..it works for the function key. On the laptop, the light with lock symbol (9) is on.

When you turn on the laptop, just before Windows starts to load tap the F8 key a couple of times. If you get a menu, choose Last Known Good.

If that does not do it, and the mouse still works fine, go to Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools and run System Restore.

Choose a date from before the keyboard problem and let it reboot. Should solve the problem.

Laptop Won't startup Vostro 1500

See if you can run the Pre-boot System Assessment (PSA) diagnostics. To run the PSA+ Diagnostics on this system, perform one of the following actions:

1) Hold down the <Fn> key while pressing the power button.

2) Turn on the system, press <F12> at the initial Dell™ logo screen, and select “Diagnostics” from the boot menu.

3) Disconnect the AC power and remove the battery. While holding down the power button, insert the AC connector into the back of the system. The system then starts and the message “Diagnostic boot selected” displays. The system then launches the PSA+ Diagnostics.

According to Dell specs, there is no error code listed that you described, (Flashing Caps LED). Also try reseating the memory modules, (you might want to try this first).
