Look for the reset button, then remove the batteries - this should fix it.

Hit the reset button (usually on the bottom of the calculator) and unplug or remove your batteries. After you plug it back in/return the batteries, hit the time/date key then the time set key. Enter the correct date using 0 for single digit months. ex. 02/02/2007. Set your time the same way but, hit the am/pm key for appropriate time.

This is for those running on batteries only, NOT if you are using the AC adapter. Canons are very picky about good batteries, but the "low batt" indicator seldom comes on to warn you. Try a fresh set of alkaline batteries. Lithium is OK too, but that is expensive overkill. Ordinary "heavy duty" is not good enough. The new batteries have always cleared the "E" and restarted the printer on my P23-DH.

P170-DH calculator. Why is there an E on the display?

OVERFLOW FUNCTION
In the following cases, when "E" is displayed, a dotted line is printed, the keyboard is electronically locked, and further operation is impossible. Press CE/C to clear the overflow. The overflow occurs when:
1) The result or the memory content exceeds 12 digits to the left of the decimal point.
2) Dividing by "0".
3) The sequential operation speed is faster than the calculation processing speed. (Buffer Register Overflow).

! Electromagnetic interference or electrostatic discharge may cause the display to malfunction or the contents of the memory to be lost or altered. Should this occur, use the tip of a ball point pen (or similar sharp object) to press the [RESET] button at the back of the calculator. After resetting, be sureto set the calendar, clock, currency and tax rate again.

Need to clear old tax rate and set new tax rate.

  1. To change the tax rate, first press AC.
  2. Then press SET % for 2 seconds.
  3. Next, press TAX+, then enter the new or current tax rate.
  4. Enter the rate for a single digit tax rate such as 5% as 5, a single number; if you have a fractional percentage rate, such as 5.75%, enter it just that way: the 5, then a decimal and followed by 7& 5.
  5. Then press SET % and you're done!
