I have a Gateway MT6821 laptop and I am having difficulty getting the screen to display. The screen stays completely black. Connecting to another monitor via VGA also does nothing. The computer starts up and seems to work otherwise. I have reseated the hard drive and memory, but it still doesn't work.

1 year late
my guess is fans work,, spin and blow, (unstated)
DVD eject button forks. unsatted.
the hot key for VGA was not pressed FN +?
and if did this correctly the vga works but the local CCFL lamps are dead, as all are this old now.

the manual on you PC covers the VGA port hot keys
on my HPs its Fn+F4 (together )
1: local CCFL cheap junk screen. lcd."back lamps dead"
2: vga
3: both
4: auto (on only some models)

CCFL dead and that huge battery shorted, killing the PC dead
are the 2 top failures on all 2010 and older PCs.

the 1st step is remove that relic large battery and run on AC power pack only
the fans turn, 1 or 2 possible

SOURCE: gateway mt6821 power jack

The gateway document describing how to take that laptop apart can be found here. However, I'll just warn you that this is not an easy task, and sometimes the force of ripping the ******** the board ruins the board connections in that area and it will not fix it to get a new jack. This is rare, but know that it could happen.

SOURCE: Gateway laptop screen is black?

This could have several causes, including malware installed on your system, but is frequently the result of some kind of hardware driver conflict. Have you recently installed any new hardware or software to your system? If so, disconnect it and try again.
The black screen is an indication that the windows os is not booting onto the system. If you have the recovery console installed, or have the cds, you can run the recovery console to troubleshoot or repair your installation of windows. This procedure is different for xp or vista, so we need to know what os you're on, as well as any error messages you see when it fails to boot.
To begin with, try tapping F8 as it boots up and see it you can get into the OS options screen, then choose Last Known good configuration to boot windows.
Here's a great article to help you troubleshoot the situation, then let us know how it goes and what comes up..

I hope this information allows you to resolve this issue. If you need further assistance, please post back with a comment to this thread.
If I've managed to answer your question or solve a problem, please take just a moment to rate this post....thanks!

WAS MISSING CHARGER, but was running on battery. will not charge battery or power up, no lights. Battery went dead MT6821 GATEWAY

Hi,

All you need to do is be sure whu will need to replace both.

If the problem is with either the charger/battery you will need to figure that out first.

Please have the battery charged of your laptop, and try using the laptop only with the battery and without the charger, If it works fine you will have to check the charger now.

In order to check the charger, please take out the battery from the laptop, now connect your charger to the laptop and try switching on the laptop. If it does not work then your charger is faulty.

You can purchase the accessories online at various portals. I am providing one of the portal information:

Does backlight stay on, or does it look like the screen is turned off? If it looks like it is turned off, can you look extremely closely and see your desktop if held in good light?
