What is the OS on your laptop? Get the drivers and full software for supported OS versions from:
http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/support/consumer/printers_multifunction/pixma_mp_series/pixma_mp210#DriversAndSoftware . Make sure to get the appropriate version for your OS (Not all 32-bit drivers will be work well with a 64-bit OS.) Install the software before connecting the data cable. The printer should be off before you plug in the cable.
If you plugged in the data cable first and installed a generic OS driver, delete that and then unplug the USB cable before installing the Canon software.
This is a USB unit. When problems occur, try a new USB cable and a
different port. If you have a USB hub or print server, try a direct
connection.
The full software will let you scan with the buttons on the all-in-one. However, a monitoring program that is part of the software must be running and the MP Navigator must be set with default information for the scan buttons.
I hope this helps. Otherwise, please provide more information on the problem that you are having. I will be glad to provide more help with the problem.
