If you are careful with it you might make it last still longer. After changing batteries the calculator usually dims the screen so that you are not able to see much. To increase the contrast, press [2nd] key and release it. Then press the UpArrow and maintain pressure until the screen darkens to your liking. While pressing the UpArrow you might see at the top right corner the numbers changing (2, 3, 4 etc.)
If this procedure is unsuccessful, you might want to take a look at the electrical terminals (battery) and see if there are any traces of corrosion due to an acid leak from the old batteries. The terminals should be clean.

My Texas Instrument TI 83 Plus will not turn on?

TI calculators have an annoying habit of dimming the screen when the batteries are changed so that it appears as if the calculator isn't turning on. Turn the calculator on (or at least press the ON key). Press and release the 2ND key. Press and hold the Up-arrow key for a few seconds and see whether the screen becomes legible. If this doesn't do it, please reply to this post and we'll go on from there.

TI-83 Plus ram cleared message when turned on

It calculator tells you Ram Cleared each time you turn it on, the most likely reason is that the backup battery is depleted. Its role is to keep the memory modules electrically refreshed when calculator is turned off. If the backup battery is dead, the memory is erased when you turn calculator OFF. Main batteries no longer supply power and the contents of the memory are cleared.
  1. Check that main batteries are good and inserted in calculator.
  2. Turn calculator OFF.
  3. Replace the backup battery.
  4. Turn calculator ON.
  5. Press the [CLEAR] key to erase the "Ram Cleared" message.
