Battery problem This morning I turned on my brand new Nikon Coolpix 5400 and got nothing on the screen. pushed some buttons and still nothing. Went to turn it off and it won't. The lens stays extended and the power light is still on. I don't know if maybe the batteries are so low they can't do anything, but I was under the impression that the camera had an indicator for the batteries really needing to be recharged. The low battery light was on last night, but I haven't seen need to be recharged light. Any suggestions would be great. Can I take the battery out now, without hurting the camera, to recharge it?

Some of these cameras go from "low" to "no" very quickly. The electronics are more sensitive to available voltage than the mechanicals and it doesn't take full voltage to keep an led lit or to retract the lens. But the cpu shuts down. I would have expected it to go through the shut down process, like retracting lens, etc., though, that's what mine does (different brand/model). But going with recharging is the first step.

It probably lacked the power to retract the lens. I'd start with recharging the battery and see if that corrects the problem.

NIkon cool pix 5400 will not turn on. Battery is fully charged.

A couple of possibilities. The battery is bad and not accepting a charge. Replace the battery. The battery terminals are dirty. Using cotton swab and some isopropyl alcohol, clean then fully dry the metal contacts on the battery and inside the battery compartment. Before turning it back on, be sure everything is fully dry.

It sounds like you should try a new set of batteries in the camera. I have a similar camera and the flash is the first to go when the batteries are dying.

I hope this helps,
