Some of these cameras go from "low" to "no" very quickly. The electronics are more sensitive to available voltage than the mechanicals and it doesn't take full voltage to keep an led lit or to retract the lens. But the cpu shuts down. I would have expected it to go through the shut down process, like retracting lens, etc., though, that's what mine does (different brand/model). But going with recharging is the first step.
It probably lacked the power to retract the lens. I'd start with recharging the battery and see if that corrects the problem.
