Need more information to really help you. Are you playing movies in the DVD/CD player of the laptop? Are you playing movies by streaming from Netflix or Amazon or Hulu or Xfinity? Are you playing movies from an external hard drive or flashdrive plugged into an older USB 2.0 port?
Your wi-fi connection may be too slow to stream without freezing. Your cpu/processor may be too old and slow to handle HD video. Your video/graphics chip built-in to the laptop may be old and not capable of handling HD quality video.
The problem is in the laser pickup assembly, the stepper motor that moves the laser is sticking on the worm gear or excessive ware on the gear linkage is preventing it from moving.
Open "My Computer".
Click with the RIGHT mouse-button on the icon for the CD/DVD drive.
Choose 'Explore'.
If your DVD drive is working, some files/folders should be displayed.
Are you using the free 'VLC' software to play your DVD-movie?
If not, search for VLC online, download it, and use it to "play" the movie.
My Emerson won't play anything except DVD Movies, never has, wasn't suppose too. Make your movies in DVD Video format and it will read them fine (unless it's broke). I make movies all the time and play them back in mine. It reads DVD-R, DVD+R, and in duel layered. It will not read RW disks!
Man I've every problem you can imagine with DVD Players. I've found when the disk gets stuck, as long as it's not jammed. You can turn the unit off or unplug it. Plug it back in but DON'T TURN IT ON! Instead hit the eject button and the drive should open the drive without trying to read the disk.
