I am trying to install from the Win & disk as the laptop wont boot due to a windows corruption. The Sony VPCeb13FG cant detect the hard drive and prompts me for a driver disk. I can find drivers which...

Windows is asking you for a driver because it has been unable to detect a hard drive installed in your laptop. Basically, it thinks that you're using a hard drive that windows can't detect by itself.

I'm afraid that this usually means your hard drive is completely broken and needs to be replaced.

I would suggest that you remove the hard drive from the laptop, (please ensure the laptop is unplugged from the mains and the battery is removed before you do this) and then make sure there is no excessive amount of dust on the connectors for the hard drive.

Put the hard drive back in and see if reseating it (plugging it back in) allows Windows to find the hard drive.

If not, it's very likely that the hard drive needs replacing. Check if it is still under warranty or not before you look into buying your own.

Windows can't find any hard drives...when installing xp

It sounds possible that your Windows XP install CD does not contain the necessary hard disk device drivers for the drive used in your Dell Vostro laptop and you would need to load these drivers separately during the XP install when the option is given to use third-party device drivers.

Some laptops may provide options in their BIOS settings to use a compatibility mode of operation for newer SATA hard drives that will make them visible to bootable utilities such as disk imaging software and older OS install CD's.

In a simple way the hard drive doesn't need a driver. Maybe the hard drive cable are not connected properly. You need to check the hard drive if is it connected correctly. Try to make also the BIOS and make your hard drive in to first boot.

Compaq has a website with downloadable drivers for all their computers. Download the drivers, burn to CD and install. Trick is, one model could have different components inside, so they list several different drivers, and not all drivers work with all computers. So unless you know what components are inside your computer, you need all the drivers and just try them until you get the right one.
