I am trying to install SBS 2011 (Win Server 2008 R2 OS) on an IBM x3400. I have created a Raid 1 (mirrored) array. When partitioning the RAID to install we get the message "Windows cannot be installed to this disk. This computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure that the disk's controller is enabled in the computer's BIOS menu.". The RAID Array is set as bootable and I cannot find any reference to the array in the BIOS setup.

Well, where did you set up the RAID1? Surely it was in the extended BIOS (a separate entry from the usual BIOS) controlling the RAID boot?

A few questions:

1. Is this a new (clean) install? If so, have you installed the drivers for the RAID controller BEFORE you install the os? Most of the time Windows will ask for this as the os check your sysem. (You will see at the bottom of the screen "if you have a 3rd party controller and need to install drivers, do so now" or something to this effect.

2. If you already have an os on this system, (Server 2008) you may need to check the the HCL for SBS 2011 to make sure you hardware is correct for the install.

Good Luck

IBM System X3400 M3 7379 hangs at UEFI Partition Initialization

1: no options inside told.
2: no CMOS COIN cell ever lasted 13 years, so id dead
3: now BIOS is in CHAOS mode. dead battery caused,
4: new coin cell,.
5: reset bios to factory fresh defaults in BIOS page 1.
6: set time and date in bios.
7: set boot order or your boot drive or raid array based on #1 above secret.
8: load Server 2012R2 is best here . or linux or what is in the list .
if using raid it must be tested first the array under the raid controller. path. depends on what is there, not told.
a dead server can be accessed via, IMM like my dell DRAC
it has page called logs to read.
Id read them. (opps it flags coin dead , see?)_

IMM (remove manager) , READ THE LOgs , remotely.>?? first?
AND SEE LAST BOOT DEVICE./? (and what)????????????????
new coin cell and ....
THEN SET BIOS BOOT ORDER TO CORRECT BOOT DEVICE?
got raid?
1 raid or more.
1 for boot?
1 for data.?
???????????????????????????
look inside yet see what is there, even count all disks see where all connect . to what.
run the raid config, some servers have raid support DVD or uSB stick to boot and manage the arrays/, but what is inside matters first
some have upgraded LSI raid cards and that matters most if there, ?
day one new had 7 cards as an option. (just with IBM alone)
there are MORE. LSI makes great RAID cards,

Got raid?
The System x3400 M3 server supports optional spare DIMMs, memory mirroring, and RAID-0, RAID-1, and RAID-1E support standard with optional RAID-5, RAID-6, RAID-10, and RAID-50 available
most servers like this the built in raid is weak , not allowing raid 6 mode.so that matters too if that was done day1, last time.

the manual is here (lenovo says EOL, zero help)

I anm not any kind of IBM guy. (data centers)
but have Dells here, and can work them well
IMM find and read all logs carefully,
most servers logs what disk drive last booted OKAY. explicitly/
and how to open the case and learn what is inside first. for sure all things RAID.

Following arrays have missing required members and cnnot be configured: Array#1-RAID-0

RAID 0 will fail with a single drive loss. So if you lost a drive, you lost the array, and most likely your datas. It should never be used in a production environment, because it can not be rebuilt.

Operating system corrupted how to recover the data

RAID is only to protect data in case of hard drive failure. Data is only recoverable from backup.

However, if you have a separate arrays for the OS and data. Meaning two arrays, you can swap arrays onto an identical server with same array configuration. Drive positions (bay /slot) are critical.

Hi I have an IBM 3400 server running 2008 sbs 64X. All I want is to monitor the raid controllers so that I can see if all is working as it should. I know the software is on the original disks but...

Hi,

Welcome to fix ya

Yes you can monitor the raid controller by using IBM RAID MANAGER softwfare. Hope you are having windows platform . Click the below link and download the software.

http://www-947.ibm.com/support/entry/portal/docdisplay?lndocid=MIGR-61707

please download the file named ibm_sw_srapp_9.20-16999_anyos_32-64.iso . After download burn it into cd . Now insert the cd and install the raid manager software.

Confuguring raid5

Hi

You would need 4 Hard disk drives in total. you would need to create 2 RAID 0 (striping) and then Mirror them (RAID 1). to elaborate, HDD A&B will be at RAID 0 as well as HDD C&D. after, you would have to Mirror your two RAID 0. (raid 0+1 is also known as raid 5)

Hope this helps.

there must be some key on the startup to enter into the raid menu. And in that raid menu you can create raid .

Upgrade IBM Xseries 346 Server

You can add drives to the array through the scsi management software, then you can extend any dynamic partitions that don't have the OS on them. I don't think you can extend the array if it contains the OS. You may need to use the disk management utility in windows to make the partitions 'dynamic disks' before you can extend the data partitions

Xseries 346 wont boot

You don't say whether or not your os is on the RAID 5 partition. Assuming that it is (for performance reasons, this is not recommended) then you should check to see if you have the option of configuring a separate raid configuration on your raid card (e.g. do you have a card with more then one RAID channel?) If this is so, I would create a separate RAID 1 array and install the OS just on that. Then you can mount the RAID 5 array with your data intact. Once you're up and running, you can remove the old OS partition, as it's no longer needed.
